Mounting 31.5 Tires on my 2001 2.4 5-Lug

Hi all, this will be my first post! I just got a set of wheels and tires for my 2.4L 5-lug, I love them but I have some concerns about fitment.

Tires:
LT265/70/17 | 31.6x10.7" Cooper Discoverer Maxx

Wheels:
(Probably) American Racing AR172 Baja Wheel 17x9"
I reached out to the seller to get the exact model number, but it looks like the rims have ~4.5in backspacing, and are ~9in wide. A tad difficult to measure with the tires mounted.

The bolt pattern on the new wheels is different so I ordered some 5x4.5" to 5x5" adapters which double as 1.25" spacers. I couldn't find any adapters in size m12x1.5 on Amazon, so I went to eBay(yikes). Not positive they will fit/last, these are them.:

I like those 3" 5-lug fabtech spindles but they're out of my price range, for now I got these to raise the front-end 2 inches:

I'm in college and just learning about trucks so I'm a tad incompetent and definitely broke, please go easy on me. I know the truck is underpowered but I wanna go ahead with the bigger tires and lift anyway, I just love the look. If I can't make these work or if they look silly, I'll just revert to stock or go smaller.

Any advice for me about installing/transitioning would be greatly appreciated, I plan to do this work on my own, believe I have everything I need.

Welcome!

Try to stay away from the lug adapters if possible. They some times come loose. The 5 lug pattern is the same as Ford rangers n explores. You can find for cheap on cl. Or 4 wheel parts n summitracing have new 15" steelies for cheap (under $100 a rim). The 31" will rub with out a spindle lift or spacer or new coils.

Those add a leafs make the rear stick up high and a really rough ride.

doable with v6 5 lug coils and a daystar spacer with a shit load of trimming. Why u abandoning ur build already?

Here's a guy that did it.. Just trimming and those 2 lift items would be needed

but the part for the v6 5 lug coil springs are moog 81070 coils... U pair that with the daystar spacer and it will give u bout 2 inches lift in the front

 

you could prolly do it with the fabtech spindle lift and trimming as well..


My own build plan for my truck is to do daystar spacer ad spindle lift up front with trimming to put on 31-32 in tires before I get fiberglass fenders.

 

Seems the overall consensus is to get spindles with add-a-leaf in the back and ~29" tires, I'll probably go that route. I found some 15" steelies and I like the walmart 235/75r15 Goodyear wranglers.

Do people usually get 1.5" spacers for their rear to match with the spindles in front?

Will the Supreme suspension spacers and torch aal that I got on Amazon work?

 

Just an FYI I have 235/75/r15s stock and they fit well lol.


I got the wild peak at3w's in E rating and they've done great. Truck rides so much more sturdy than the stock pizza cutter tires. DO u want pics of fitment with stock ride on the 235's? I'm gonna keep my 235's when I lift till I get money bc I wanna regear when I go up in tire size.



The 1.5 in spacer will give an inch give or take of lift, u will still have a lil rake with that on stock rear suspension. If u do the add a lift in the rear then yes u might want the added spacer to make it level. Because the spindle alone with rear suspension makes the 5 lug level

I might just do the front lift to reduce the rake and leave it at that

 

Keep in mind that increasing the overall diameter of the wheel/tire will have an impact on the way your Taco drives.

The 2.4 isn’t exactly a powerhouse, so it will take more energy to get the truck moving from a dead stop because larger wheels and tires will reduce the final torque output.

In other words, you will be putting more strain on your clutch (especially on hills) because the engine will now have a higher tendency to bog down.

Your speedometer will also not be as accurate but that isn’t a big deal.

I hate to sound stupid here but I think the shock extender is just for the shock itself and not the coil spring??
We do not have coilovers like 6 lug and have a coil springs, so u gotta run a coil spacer.

TBH u could just do the spacer and bigger tires like u said and imo have plenty of clearance for some modest offroading. I fill my bed up and go camping and trailing often on stock height with the 235's and have done well.

 

In regards to "feeling slow" with bigger tires.

I did the deck plate mod with K&N drop in filter, and my truck feels bout the same as when I was on 26 inch pizza cutters as I do with my 235's. The truck will still get up and go p damn well with the MT.


31's is where you'll notice the power loss and will need to consider a regear, but many have still ran their trucks stock gearing with those tires

 

I just ordered the daystar spacers and v6 coil springs, probably gonna leave the rear stock. Would my truck be level with that setup?

 

Yup, should be level maybe a lil higher in the front at first until springs settle. Interested to see how ur build turn out man, please post pics as u progress. Truck should great with that setup and some 235's


I still have my daystars at home, just waiting to bite the 3-4 hundred dollar bullet on spindles haha
