The auto has MPG’s in mind unless you hit the ECT button, which holds out the gears and drives as it should imo.

My favorite part about our Aisin AC60F(4wd) AT is that it’s very robust and near bulletproof. You rarely hear about one going bad or leaking in a Tacoma. Log on to an F-150 forum if you want to read about common tranny leaks and failures.

AT on my 2020 works great - shifts very smooth. For a DD, I personally prefer an AT now (this is coming from someone who has owned >20 MT vehicles). I also prefer an AT when wheeling and driving on trails. The Tacoma isn't a hot rod. If you want increased throttle response, just use the ECT button, which works well enough. If you want a "fast" truck, either buy something with a v8 or wait for something electric.

You really need to drive one and make your own decision.
That said, I much prefer the MT on mine and would only get an AT as a compromise if the wife had to be able to drive it.

Well @boynoyce, to be precise, I wouldn't say we're a clique. In fact, we're the opposite of a clique. We want everyone to join up. In fact we won't (embarrassingly) shut up about it.

Thanks to everyone who gave mature and useful advice and input! I have located a MT at a dealership 40 miles away so I'll go try that out and go from there. Thanks again to those of you who are productive members of society!

Here's a perspective from a frequent driver, we also live in an area where we have lots of small mountains...I have put on just under 50K miles since I bought mine new in Jan of 19 (lots of highway, big city, small town and around the farm miles)..I have the AT...zero issues. It is predictable - and drives like I'd expect a mid sized truck to drive. I have V8s in several other bigger vehicles we currently own and they probably have more power, but I've never tried/needed it. I've never needed more power than this truck has had available (and I do not use the ECT button). I've owned countless MT vehicles in my 30+ years of owning vehicles...I have loved the MT vehicles I've owned over the years - I believe most - except the CJs/Wranglers - were sports cars (CJs, Wranglers, Corvettes, Triumphs, Acuras, Audis and BMWs are all I can remember right now). I would never consider a MT for a daily driver anymore as I like the convenience of an AT. Good luck on YOUR decision - I believe these are great little trucks and IF you take the FREE advice for what it is; THEN weigh the PROS/CONS, AND drive both...YOU will be happy for years to come - GOOD LUCK and be safe.

the trans is great in the mt but mt trucks aren't for everyone as you know. i wouldn't say it's better, just totally different.

one thing is the mt allows you to get into actual performance somewhat without going into FI territory. it's a lot of work to get it going, but neither the motor or trans are a problem once unlocked, which is subjective of course.

You will not be dissapointed with AT or MT 3rd gen taco, they both drive fine. Like others have mentioned, you loose some options if you go MT route. I really wanted OR with 4 doors, but none in canada, so i had to get Sport DC, no regrets at all. I had to have a manual so i had to take whatever they offered.

MT is geared a bit lower and rear diff is geared lower 4.3 vs 3.9. AT will get better MPGs on the highway.

I love how my truck drives, plenty of power, tranny is smooth, truck rides very comfortable and quiet. I love it more everyday.

I drove my buddies 19 OR with AT and it drove beautiful. No "hunting" bullshit, its a very crisp tranny. I was very pleased with it and i do not like slushboxes. I would never buy AT taco though, not because they suck, its just my personal preference. I knew i wanted MT only, even if it came with 4 cyl and manual windows.

Good luck buddy, post pics once you buy!

I would agree with rev hang and ADM. But what about the DFCO and which clutch problems are we talking about here?

DFCO just saves fuel when im driving downhill in gear, doesnt affect my driving at all. Even modern cars with ATs got DFCO. The only clutch "problem" i had when it was squeaking, easy fix.

50k on my clutch and good as new - my statement wasn’t made with longevity as a concern....

I think I am one of the few that is thinking less and less about doing the ADM. I have really smooth shifts and just dont see the need to do it at this point. I also feel like the rev hang is a little exaggerated. I still have my 2004 Jeep TJ in Manual and it revs down a little faster but not by much compared to my Taco. So "engine braking" seems fairly normal.

The only times when i hated the accumulator, was when trying to rev match and when i had those subtle clunks when shifting. Other than that, its perfectly fine for normal everyday driving. The rev hang just takes some getting used to, it doesnt really bother me anymore.

I just wish the throttle pedal was a bit more responsive but all tacos are like that.

Agree with everything you said. Yeah the rev matching can be a tiny bit more difficult but I think once you learn the clutch its completely fine.

It’s like that in the 2.7 as well - no actuator (that I know of) though so shifting is slightly more predictable. 1st - 2nd is always a little rough though.

I had 3 MT trucks and when shifting from 1st to 2nd , you always had to pay a bit more attention if you wanted that perfect shift.

And yes the 2.7L 5spd doesnt have the accumulator.

Same here, the only time I notice the accumulator is during rev matching, pretty much have adjusted myself to it at this point.
