Musical instruments you love and hate

Hey all,

I thought it might be fun to see what we all like or dislike in terms of the sounds of musical instruments. In other words, list one instrument that you love the sound of , and another that is like fingernails on a chalkboard to your ears.

I started a similar thread on another forum a few years ago and it was interesting to see what the collective opinion was of certain instruments (there was one that consistently popped up in the 'dislike' list).

I'll start it off!

Can't get enough of:

The sound of a Hammond tonewheel organ (B2, B3, C2, etc.) with the percussion settings on

Can't stand the sound of:

A squealing saxophone

 

Dislikes: Accordion, Bagpipes, Sitar...

Likes: slightly wistful sounding muted trumpet... evoking images of a darkened 1950s city in the pre-dawn light...

 

Like:
classical guitar, solo cello, piano (certain people playing it), shakuhachi

Dislike:
any instrument that is out of tune.

 

What was the consistent dislike?

 

Like: Porky Pie "dry" snare drum
Hate: Violin or Fiddle ; all sounds the same in my opinion

 

love deep, warm American 6L6 amps (Mesas, Ampegs, Fenders) and bright brassy synths (Oberheims, Sequentials/ Dave Smith)

dislike oversaturated "djent" metal guitars

if the human voice can be considered a 'musical instrument' then there are some i dislike especially that Roseanne Barr National Anthem fiasco eons ago

Just kidding, I know it's personal taste.

I played saxophone in grade school, and still love hearing it on songs that you wouldn't typically think a sax would be on.

I was actually thinking about making a ridiculous playlist to celebrate the sweet sounds of the sax:
Huey Lewis and the News, Macklemore, Bruno Mars, hell even Katie Perry.

If anyone wants to add to this, I'm all ears....

You know I never really liked or disliked the flute until I played in a band and one of the guys would play the flute on everything from Pink Floyd to SRV. We finally banned him from bringing the damn things. Yes he had more than one and the worst was the bass flute.

 

Like: Bagpipes
Dislike: Roseanne's version of The Star Spangled Banner
