Just Bought My First Tacoma and Need Suggestions on Tires

Howdy Fellas,

Traded in my POS 2017 Chevy Colorado for a 2020 TRD Off Road. I live in Colorado and have a few more months of snow. My Chevy was running Falken Wildpeaks and they seemed to do the job, and my Tacoma comes with Goodyear Wrangler Adventure ATs. My question is, do you think the tires that came with the Tacoma are good enough to handle the snow up here?

They should be fine for street driving but if I were you, I would sell them ASAP (they still have decent tread depth) and get a more aggressive A/T tire that will provide some better offroad performance come spring and summertime. Also, I tend to stay away from budget tires/brands as I have manager friends working at Discount Tire and they have nothing good to say about Falkens. Other than the price.

 

I’ve gone across all of the US with the factory goodyears. They do great in snow, rocks, and ok in sand. Not so great in sticky mud, and what you’d expect for a non-winter tire on ice.
On my way back to Alaska the 4x4 went out and i had to go through a white out blizzard in 2wd - no problems (though i had probably 1,000lbs in the bed)

I would upgrade. Falken Wildpeak At3w. 265/75r16 no rubbing even with stock suspension.

The Goodyear wranglers are good decent in snow. Ill be upgrading to a good mud snow tire this next fall.

Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac LT265/75R-16.

These are a load "C" light-truck tire, aren't too heavy, look pretty good and are 3PMS-rated. I live in central Pennsylvania where we see all kinds of weather but I bought these primarily for the snow/ice traction capabilities. The consensus on this forum is the 265/75R-16 and 265/70R-17 are the 2 tires sizes you can run on a stock 3rd-gen off-road/pro without rubbing issues. After 2000 miles, I can affirm this to be true; however, I've not yet had these tires in an off-road situation where the suspension would be fully articulated.

I run these tires at 37 PSI on all 4 wheels, which with my rig provides optimal ride quality, handling, fuel economy and tire wear (I tow a utility trailer and a boat a fair bit so I run a bit higher PSI in the rear tires.)

I should note, my truck is NOT lifted and is running the OEM suspension.

 

Get some Cooper STT Pro's best tire I have ever owned here in Mass snow season. I live in a very hilly part of town and with these didn't even have to engage 4WD

Made a mistake and sold all those and now have 5 New in Box wheels I'm putting on this week.

 

You could also check out the 255/85R16 tire size. Pretty much limits you to the Cooper ST MAXX, Cooper STT, and the Toyo MT. But, if those treads serve your needs you get a 33" tall tire that is marginally narrower than stock. The Toyo MTs actual measure close to 33.5" tall and 1.2" wide. So about a 0.25" narrower tread and over 3" taller. I love my Toyo's, but live in Southern Texas so cant verify snow performance.

 

That's what my Cooper's are although they are 255/75/17 C Load which is nice

 

The weight of E rated tires is noticeable for sure. Not unbearable though.

 

Subscribed to this thread for future reference. My new Tacoma OR 4x4 also came with the OEM Goodyear Wrangler Adventure ATs, and I'm debating on whether to keep them on. I don't plan to do much (if any) off-road in the near future, but I still want a solid tire on the truck that can handle rain and snow for when I need it.
