Does anyone know if there is a way (or a mod) to turn on a stock rear view camera (more precisely, to view the screen on the dashboard) without putting the car in reverse? I didn't see anything in the owners manual.

I ask this because with a cap on the truck, there is an obvious loss of visibility from the rear view mirror.

    thanks.

Yeah the anytime camera mod. Have mine on a switch next to the auto headlights. Works great, especially if towing or blinded by cap

Thank you for the replies. My truck is an SR with the cheaper "Toyota" radio. I dont think it is en entune radio. it is not a touch screen. anyone know if it will still work, or if not, is there another option?

    thanks again. much appreciated.

Pretty sure that mod is just tricking the radio into thinking you're in reverse, so it should be pretty universal. Although I don't know if the wires are going to be different.

This is a good thread to follow if you don't want to buy a pre-made kit: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/backup-camera-anytime-mod.468447/

You have to first figure out what type of switch you're using. If you want to use one of the OEM-style push-button switches, that is called a "single pole single throw" switch and is going to require that you solder an inline diode into your harness so that you don't turn your reverse lights on. Here's a diagram made by @opentang :

You can pre-make the diode setup on your work bench. Get some small-gauge wire (like 18 ga), solder a 3" piece of it to the bottom of the diode, then solder 2 3" pieces to the top (to form a split at the top). Crimp then solder female connectors of your choice to the open ends of the 3 wires. Shrink-wrap over all soldered joints. Someone used to sell these pre-made but don't anymore. It's very straightforward. When you go to tap your gray reverse wire you'd cut it and crimp + solder the male connectors onto the open ends. Plug it into your pre-made diode setup. For everything else use simple t-taps. If you want I have a shit ton of extra diodes in preparation for this project. I can post some step-by-step pictures if you'd like.

If you're using a single pole double throw switch it's much easier (just tap the correct wires with t-taps):

Both methods are possible and not overly difficult but you need to read read read.
