I've used the vent mounts (or a mount that only has space near a vent) before and had a phone overheat during the winter. Held it out the window going down the freeway to cool it down lol. I'm doing some digging on this DMM now.

The cables I was thinking about connect to the rear of the 12v input in the dash which is how the TPAM connects for USB charging. Looking to keep a more permanent setup ready to go "on the fly" and out of the way. I already use USB cords to charge the phone and leave it out of the way so the cord isn't an issue, but when I mount to the dash, it's just loose cables running up to them.

Yeah, kinda bummed that DMM thing isn't for 4Runners... I dunno, maybe it is, but I'm not reading 79 pages to find out, lol. Gotta go look at my dash and see if I can whip something like that up for the 4Runner...

Was also thinking of adding a USB plug up near the mount, then you can use one of those 6" long usb cables to plug your phone to.

    Something like this:

My wife sits in the passenger seat and tells me where to go. Been working for 37 years. She is one of the few women who can really read a paper map. Which we used for years before she started using a smart phone.

OMG. I had a GF who could not read a map. I would show her where we were and 5 minutes later she couldn’t navigate me in.

Want to add a iPad mini to my dash set up. Does the bad elf work well?

    ^^^^I'm looking into this too

I think getting the extension arms for the dash mount would allow you to put the devices below your line of sight, but I'm not sure. That is what I'm planning on trying once I get it.

This was taken at eye level and is a good representation of my view out of the front windshield.
The rear view mirror blocks way more of my line of sight than my 10.5" tablet.

    Cheers

I use Gaia GPS on a Samsung Galaxy tablet, mounted on a Ram mount attached to the passenger seat bolt, which puts the tablet by the center console around shifter height. This is the only Android technology I own, I got it specifically for this use for the SD card memory. 128g sd card holds a lot of maps! I also download the offline Google maps for the area I’m traveling in.

I use Gaia GPS on an android phone and have no issues with it.

Are you looking to just have an extra device on hand?...

Nice Thread -- I use a Ram Mount for iPad, iPad Mini (3rd Gen 64g not cellular only WiFi), and GAIA GPS App & Pre-loaded Google Maps.
I always carry Tom Harrison paper maps.

That, and a bigger screen for the maps. Sure, I can use my phone but I like a bigger screen for it.

There are older Garmin Nuvi's and other 6in screen Garmins on Craigslist, FB Marketplace and Offerup for dirt cheap.
You can updated the maps to OpenStreetMaps or something else generic and save a ton of money.

Pretty sure you can move your mirror up more. It took me almost a year to realize that the one on my '17 4Runner has 2 ball pivots so it can move horizontally and vertically, so I moved it up closer to the ceiling for less obstruction.

    Thanks for that.
I moved it up as far as I could. I really wish it could go an inch or two higher, but it definitely helps!

    Cheers
