good morning! Driving on ice and snow this morning and in four wheel drive my truck is grabbing, pulling, surging and not stable at all. Switch back to 2H and no issues. I have been under the truck checking the driveline and even did the front diff motor solder and position sensor replacement on transfer case. Fluid is good and fresh. This one has me stumped. Ideas?

Do you mean it feels like there is resistance moving forward? Does this happen on the ice and snow only or on mostly pavement?

Could also be the dumb Auto lsd kicking in

It is smooth in 4H on dry pavement, completely unstable on ice. I don’t feel resistance constantly but it does resist and then let go, surge.

Will do. It also stopped beeping at me when the rear ended slides out awhile back. Is this all pointing to a problem in the LSD system?

Sounds like my truck. I just turn off traction control when ever in 4wd.

Well I tried turning off the LSD and it is automatically on in four-wheel-drive. When I return to 2 Wheel Dr. I can then light the auto LSD on the dash.

Never supposed to use 4X4 on dry pavement. If you've been doing so I suspect you've damaged something internally. And even when driving on snow, if traction is good enough that you can get around in 4X2 you shouldn't be in 4X4. 4X4 isn't supposed to be used constantly. Just as needed to get through tough spots.

read the owners manual on how to turn off TCS when in four wheel drive, and Marshall R brings up a good point about being careful with 4h on pavement. Sort of okay on straightaways, but safe answer is usually no.

4x4 on dry pavement for test purposes only, always in a straight line, less than 5 miles in the 144000 on the truck. I don’t doubt something is broken but it wasn’t from stupidity. If I had waited for it to snow to test all of my driveline repairs I would still be waiting. The biggest issue going forward is that when I shut off my LSD and traction control it is turned back on automatically when I select H4 and that doesn’t fit the chart as far as I can tell. The chimes are gone when the truck loses traction, and have been for awhile. I didn’t see exactly what system initiates those chimes but suspect that is where the problem lies. It does feel exactly like a messed up abs system as it actively grabs and pulls at the steering when in H4 but H2 is fine. No codes, no lights on the dash.

Just a guess but it could be a wheel speed sensor issue. Has it set any codes?

Any chance you have different size tires?

No codes I know of unless it records without lighting the check engine light. I put 17” rims and tires on it from a 2017 Tacoma.

Just a thought- I’ve had a lot of issues this winter with frozen drum brakes. Sometimes only one side will freeze/ stick and this creates traction issues as well as some bucking/ unpredictable handling on ice and snow. As soon as I hit dry pavement, there is enough traction to free everything and I’m good. Not sure if this makes sense- think you said it’s fine in. 2wd, but something to think on.

Thank you all for your responses. I am going to dig into it early next week with an obd and flashlight. I did find a way to reset the traction control as well. Something I sent right, no traction beep, grabbing and surging....

I reset/calibrated the VSC with the jumper wire trick. We don’t have snow here but everything seems to be working as it should. Next I need to work on the horrific clunk when going from 4H back to 2H.
