02 with 220k miles?

Im looking at a 02 V6 2wd for my son. It is in nice shape and well maintained. However it has 220k miles on it. What do you think? Is it at the point of starting to nickel and dime me to death...

It's older than your son is (I assume). How much does HE nickle and dime you?

There are too many variables besides just the mileage to make that kind of decision. 220k is really not all that much. These trucks easily last 500k when properly maintained.

I would take a truck with 250k miles and good maintenance records over a truck with 100k miles and no records.

 

220K on an 18 year old truck isn't really that bad. As long as it isn't abused you should be alright as long as it is in good condition.

 

He dosen't nickle and dime its $50 and $100...

However, any vehicle with that kind of mileage will have risks. It's just part of aging.

If the truck looks good, the seller has a sheaf of paperwork, and an independent mechanic who does your prepurchase inspection gives the thumbs up (including a compresson check and full frame inspection) your risk is much lower.

Are you & son capable/willing to do routine maintenance and even minor repairs? If so, you get to keep lots of nickels and dimes.

If you are a 'take it to the shop' type, well, any high miler anything will 'cause some headaches.

 

Yep, great point about the DIY.

Not only is DIY maintenance a LOT cheaper than taking it to a shop, but it's a great learning experience, too.

I had an old POS car as my first car, and my dad and I did most of the work ourselves. A great learning experience. Ironically, I think my dad learned more than I did. My oldest brother once called my dad from college and asked why the oil light was on, and when my dad asked him the last time he checked the oil, my brother says "the oil?"

That's when my dad realized he never actually went over any of that stuff with him and he was completely clueless, so by the time it got to me, he was all about rotating tires, changing oil, filters, etc...

 

If it means anything, I have a single owner '03 with 364K on it that I plan on giving to my daughter in 2-3 years. As long as the truck is rust free, mechanically checks out and doesn't appear to be abused I would say your son (if he keeps up with maintenance) could easily get another 200K out of it at a minimum. Mileage on these trucks is not the determining factor.

 

I agree diy is the way to go and is great for him also. He is definitely in the process of becoming a gearhead. So im thinking those miles are reasonable for a

 

Once you bring the neglected areas up to speed you should be good to go.

Now if you pay labor for every little thing it might not be the best idea .

bottom line up front: 220k doesn't bother me any more than 120k would. its got a lot left in it.

my 01 has 331k miles on it and i didn't particularly maintain it well. always changed engine oil on time but besides that didn't do much. timing belt once, balljoints etc.

that said, this year i had to overhaul a lot of things to bring it back up to what i would consider well maintained.
not so much miles, but just age causes certain issues like rubber components roting.
doing it myself, i probably spent 3500 just this past year to make up for years of neglect. 2 years ago i spent 2500 to have auto trans rebuilt. the biggest jobs besides trans were timing belt, control arm bushings and steering rack. if a shop did it it would have been 7k instead of 3500.
BUT now i have a very well maintained 1st Gen that's ready to go until the engine dies at hopefully over 500k, 10 plus years from now for me. when the engine dies that will be another 1000 or so for a lower mileage engine. maybe 2500 if a shop did it.

purchase price plus 10k in maintenance over next 10 years will get you a truck that will do another 250k miles or more. its actually a pretty good deal.

 

Well if youre serious about the truck get your son a 4 banger much more reliable than a v6, but if you must then check for rust, and really when checking out a car check it all out make sure its not on its last legs, I have a 01 single cab 2.4l auto with over 303k miles still going strong, but if its for your son id get him a 4 banger, heck when I was young if it ran I was living my life like its golden, beggers cant be choosers

 

The only reason I don`t get a newer Truck is every time I get a extra $10,000 saved some House Hold emergency comes along.

Being free of any payments I don`t want to go that route again.

easier to just keep going with the Truck I have doing what ever work needs done. 245,000 or so miles

I would disagree that they 2.7 is more reliable. The 5vz is a workhorse. I've seen more head gasket issues with the 2.7 than the 3.4 motor. 308k on my 3.4 motor with just general maintenance.

Agreed that maintenance is more important. People get so hung up on mileage. Sure it makes some difference but I looked at a 05 Tundra a while back with only 78k but it was a nightmare because it actually sat too long. Packrats ate wiring, had differential noise, leaks, etc.

 

I wouldn't worry about 220,000 on a 1st-Gen Tacoma, you should easily get another 100,000>150,000 and possibly more.
Just check it out good and make sure there's no serious rust.

Wrong, there are more 4 bangers than v6’s

 

Both excellent motors when properly maintained. If maintenance records are included and everything done on time you will have a solid Truck. CHECK THE FRAME FIRST
