I did more pool maintenance today. I topped off the pool, skimmed it, replaced the hose for the pool cover pump, cleaned the filter cartridge, replaced the venturi and hoses for the ozone generator, and sprayed out the salt cell and swapped it around.

I didn't get the cartridge filter completely clean, but it's a hell of a lot better than it was. I also tried replacing the o-ring that seals the two halves of the filter body, but I couldn't get the halves to go back together with the new o-ring. I had to put the old o-ring back on to get it back together. The old o-ring isn't leaking, but it definitely has taken a set.

 

coincidence. I was doing maintenance on my spa. I had drained it a few months ago. With all the power outages the GFCI had kicked off and it got cold.

I went to pressure wash it but no power. I took that GFCI apart and it was filled with water. Great! I ordered a replacement from Amazon yesterday and got it this morning.

I power washed the inside of the spa then started filling it up. Replaced the pool size filter and am now just waiting for it to heat back up. 74* maybe tomorrow night if I'm lucky before it's ready.

 

Are you running a cartridge filter? How bad is the cartridge cost?

After seeing the inside of my filter for the first time today, I thought it might be a good idea to replace the cartridge. I looked up the cartridge, and the lowest price that I found was $237. I think I'm going to try some filter cleaning solution first.

It's 200 sq.ft. Unfortunately, it looks like the only option is OEM.

 

Damn! I looked and did not see a cheaper alternate for you.

I can say that my spa got up to 102* and I enjoyed a late night dip that I have not enjoyed in months.

 

Finally, finished and installed the drawer fronts in some closet built-in's... it'll be awhile for the cherry to darken up to match the cab I put in a few years ago... Also, missing the toe kick...

It's kinda weird, but we both liked it. Plus it's a lot brighter than what we had.

I have been deep into this renovation for a little over a year now, working on it after work and on the weekends. If I wasn't lazy I could have created my own thread with the amount of pictures I have taken along the way!

*clarification: I have a rear, split-entry bungalow style house*

The most recent major project that I am almost complete has been changing the stair layout in the house. The original design was ... blah blah blah (had something typed up but..) it was extremely steep and definitely not to code haha. And on top of that, I had to duck sideways to not hit my head on my way down to the basement. The stairs had a landing that had a door to the back yard:
Don't mind the rest of the house, I was also in the midst of replacing all exterior windows and doors

I have since removed the old stairs, opened up the floor on the main level, and also cut into the block foundation to accept a 6ft patio door. The big challenges were to do this in steps that assured I didn't have the roof collapse, and have everything properly supported.

First was opening up the exterior wall and building a large 8ft header to take the weight to either side of my new opening.

After the exterior wall was properly re-framed, I cut out the block foundation using a diamond disc on a grinder. Cleaned it up and after doing many steps in between, installed the patio door with lots of 3m flashing and what not.

The tricky part here was that I am also installing 2" rigid insulation on the outside envelope, and had to support the patio door as is sat outside the foundation footprint. I hung a ledger on the outside of the foundation (can see it below the patio door in the above photo)

Also, everything has been done by me, a close friend, and my father!

 

After the patio door was installed, I continued on with installing the remaining windows and doors.

Pretty much every window opening changed in size and location. Lot of re-framing!

After the outside envelope was done and water tight, I turned my attention back inside to the big gaping hole in the center of my house hahahah


I had to support some floor joists around the opening, as I was going with a different stair layout than what was in there. Doing this was the slowest part as I was trying to think 1,000,000 steps ahead on the layout and flow of the house for when it was complete. Lots of measuring and measuring and measuring.


Eventually I came up with what I wanted, and built a 4x8 landing in front of the patio door, and lots of steps later, came to where I am now. I have the upper and lower flights of stairs roughed in, and have temporary treads in so I can stop using a ladder to go from the basement to upstairs!

I don't have a good final photo of the treads and what not, but more progress shots of the house to follow!

 

Is your exterior XPS over plywood or is that the sheeting?

how thick is the styro?

also I see you taped all your styro seams and over your fasteners , is the styrofoam intended to be your air barrier?

 

Today I finished the deck and railing I've been working on for the last few weeks

Finished up the last of the 2 part Bangkarai handrail today

Used dominoes to reinforce and register all the handrail joints

The top cap is attached to the sub cap with screws from below , here you can see a couple of the holes I predrilled through the sub cap to mount the top cap

I used one of these drill guides to make sure all my predrilled holes were plumb

We've installed all the cable and tensioners but need to wait till tomorrow to tension the cables as the handrail needs to be in place before tensioning and I just got that finished this afternoon





House is complete , just need an inspection on the railing system and then we move on to building a privacy fence on the roadside before we pull stakes and move on out of this project
