2020 Suspension, Wheels, and Tires Upgrade

Monday, I am taking my 2020 DCSB TRD Off Road to 4 Wheel Parts, and they are going to install a 2-3" lift and wheels and tires. I selected one of the Pro Comp wheels (Vertigo with dark grey center and black rims (should look good with Cement I think) and Pro Comp 285/70R17 A/T Sport tires. They said they have to remove the mud flaps, but after doing that there will be no rubbing.

I did read some rather disconcerting reviews from 2012/13 about those tires being not so great. I called 4WP and talked with them about my misgivings (out of round, constantly coming out of balance, etc.) and the guy admitted they did have some issues a few years back but now they have switched to Maxxis to manufacture them and those problems are gone. They also have a 60 day right to return them for a refund and a 60,000 mile guarantee. Not a rating, but an actual tread wear guarantee.

I hope I am not making a mistake. The tires are actually about $7.00 each *more* than the Toyo ATII (which I had on my 2018 Taco and really enjoyed).

 

I would just stick to my BFG KO2’s!

Stay away from 4 Wheel Parts #1, stay away from Pro Chomp #2. #3 start over from the beginning.

 

First off we are all trying to help. I’ll start off by saying. A year ago I got my truck. Wanted it lifted right away. Wasted my time and money had a spacer Lift. That being said. Yes it was lifted. Not the right way. Alignment was never right. Ride wasn’t bad but felt different. Talking to members seeing what knowledge they have and listening to them. I just installed 5100’s all around. 1.5” front 1.5” rear. To keep rake. Ride is awesome. From a 48 year old dude. I don’t off-road to much. This kit is perfect for that. Imo for daily driving and camping , light off-roading, it’s a great kit. You can’t go wrong.

6112/5160's should be your starting point when looking at suspension imo. I don't think anything under those are worth the time and/or money to get them installed. Just one man's opinion.

 

I had a local shop (Dave Wong's Offroad Outlet in Sonora California) do the lift on my 2018 SR5 ACLB, and was very pleased with the way it worked, except that I did not get as much lift as I had hoped for. That was OME all around (coils, Dakar leaf pack, shocks). It still rubbed on bumps at full lock with Toyo ATII 265/70x17s.

I am 70 years old, and have been 4 wheeling with various vehicles since around 1980, so this is not my first rodeo. Yes I am aware of the downsides and pitfalls of lifting vehicles. I have done all the work myself several times but now am old enough that I don't want to do the work myself, but I have the money to get someone else to do it.

The lift 4WP was going to do was reasonable sounding in the front (OME 887 coils, 5100s, SPC upper control arms). But the rear was going to be a 1" block/spacer even though I told them several times I did not want a spacer lift. They gave me some mumbo jumbo about the truck having about 2 1/2" of rake, so the 3" lift in the front plus the 1" spacer in the rear would lift and level the truck... but I still don't see how a 1" spacer in the rear was gonna do anything but raise the rear 1".

In addition, they wanted almost $900 in labor and "miscellaneous" charges. It was about $4k including the wheels and tires. I was uncomfortable with the whole thing even though it seemed to be an easy one-stop deal... that's why I posted here.

I do live kinda in the middle of nowhere and not many choices, but Wong is only about 30 miles away from me (4WP is about 70 miles). I think I will be better off with Dave Wong.

OK, the order with 4WP is cancelled. Starting over with a clean slate.

I had a feeling 285/70x17 tires were a step too far, so I will likely go with 265. Not sure about sticking with 16" for the wheels or going to 17". I like the idea of the 16s because of having more sidewall height (265/75x16).

I had a great experience with the Toyo ATII on my 2018, so may just go with those again. Or maybe DuraTracs.

The OME lift on my 2018 worked really well, may do that again but with perhaps OME 888s instead of 887s. I liked the Nitrocharger shocks and the Dakar spring pack. I don't think I need UCAs. I did not have them changed on the 2018 and it aligned properly and performed great.

 

I will probably go with Method wheels. I had the Method Vex wheels on my 2018 and liked them fine.

 

OK, going with Goodyear Duratrac 265/75R16 on Method 305 NV matte black wheels. OME struts and shocks, OME springs and Dakar spring pack. It's much more conservative than the original deal I was going to do but I think I will be happy with it. Basically the same setup as on my 2018 but with 16" instead of 17" wheels.
