Hey guys I have a few questions. I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma trd off road. I am at 6500 miles on the current oil change. I'll be doing an oil change this weekend and I would like to send a sample to Blackstone labs to test the quality of the engine. Has anybody here done this before?
If this oil sample comes back good, I'll keep the truck. I seems I have been burning oil. I know some is normal, but it seems like a slightly abnormal amount. Sorry for the long rant, but if the engine is good what are the best maintenance things to do at 100k?
I was thinking brake fluid change, transmission fluid change, gear oils in the differentials and transfer case, coolant flush/change, new plugs and wires. What do you guys think? I'll be getting 1400 dollars back from taxes in less than 2 weeks and I will use some of that.
    Thanks guys.

How much oil is it consuming?
The recommended Oil Change Interval is 5,000 miles.

    Using some oil is normal.
1/2 qt. Per 5k miles would not concern me.

    The maintenance guide says 5k.
The maintenance guide doesn’t specify Synthetic or Conventional.
I personally run conventional and do 5K changes.

That’s what Toyota had in it when I bought it.
So I just kept running it. Kendall Oil for a long time.
Now, I use any name brand. As long as it is name brand and meets the oil grade requirements.

Along with your fluid changes and spark plugs, I would check the PCV valve. I checked mine around 130k and it was pretty gummy. Although you can clean it if it still “rattles”, I went ahead and replaced it for $6. I’d also clean the throttle body/MAF sensor if it hasn’t been touched. Otherwise, keep on rolling!

A leak down/compression test will tell you more about the health of your engine than a $25 oil analysis. It’s not that an oil analysis is useless... but you don’t have any data for your specific engine to compare it to. You need a set of data to compare to, that way you can see what wear is trending up or down or staying the same. One analysis is not going to show you the wear trend. No two engines wear the same, and they all wear differently depending upon the environment in which they are operated.

    Still thinking about it.
I'm pulling my first sample for Blackstone this weekend. Synthetic oil with 5k on it. I'm just curious about the condition of the oil, as I sure don't anticipate finding out that I have a wear problem. However, if I had noticed suddenly increased oil consumption, then I'd be interested in knowing what they say about wear particles, etc..

This will be my second oil change on this truck which had 30k on it when I got it. I figure the analysis will help me establish a baseline for further comparisons on down the road. Also, if they tell me the oil can stay in longer next time, I might stretch the change interval out a bit. It's all in good fun for my curiosity I guess.

I recently just got my first UOA back from black stone at 100k miles and it’s definitely worth the peace of mind. As far as burning oil goes maybe consider a air oil separator or running rotella t6 5w40 Not all that common to do in the Tacoma world but a lot of ppl do it in other vehicles when getting excessive blow by. I actually ran T6 in my last subaru for years and had no problems and it slowed my oil consumption down from 1.5 qts an oil change down to about half a quart.

Yep, spark plugs every 30k. Diffs and transfer case every 60k(transmission too if it’s a manual). I don’t remember the others off the top of my head lol

I started sending Used Engine Oil Samples to Blackstone Labs for my 2012 Tacoma and 2016 Harley Davidson FLHTK last year. No regrets since it's only $28 and according to them I'm doing everything right......

Hey guys thanks for the responses. I need to do the plugs and wires. So to kill 2 birds with one stone I will buy the plugs and wires and have a mechanic install them but while he is doing it he can do a compression/leakdown test.
What plugs and wires do you guys use on your second gen? Thanks

2nd gens use coil packs. You just need plugs unless you’re having issues.

And Denso/NGK seem to be the go to around here and is what I use. Also a plug change is fairly simple and doable at home if you want.
