Hi All, just performed my first oil change on my 20’ TRD OR, the check list mentioned greasing the universal joints, I haven’t looked closely but I’m assuming there’s zerks provided for this job, what kind of grease is recommended for this service? Thx.

    Work in progress...
First time, I had to force the grease into the zerks, now it goes pretty easily.

You will only have two universal joints with grease fittings on your front propeller shaft only. The u-joints are greased with a very high quality grease prior to assembly. The fact the zerk fittings appear dry or painted-over is irrelevant. The black tacky grease you will force out of the u-joints during your first grease routine is very good stuff.

What I’m Wondering about is why would Toyota request this service at 5K?? I chosen to do the oil at 5K do to maintenance schedule stating “if operated in temps below 35F and trips under 5 miles” do the oil at 5K,but the grease service seems very early, do they skimp on grease during factory assembly?

The u joints are a part supplied to Toyota (I believe by Spicer?). There is no skimping in my opinion. The driveline parts will have a break in period after which it is probably a good idea to pump out the factory grease, and any metallic particles in it, with fresh grease.

Another factor is a lot of people never use 4WD on their 4X4 Tacoma’s, so the grease may need refreshing simply because it hasn’t been properly warmed and redistributed around the needle bearing in many miles. I dunno.....just a guess.
