You can bet they'll try to take a chunk out of your retirement pay. A good friend of mine spent a lot of years at Camp Pendleton, but retired outside of Quantico. California came after him saying he earned that retirement in California and needed to pay taxes to California even if he was a Virginia resident.

He told them to pound sand!

Darn glad I maintained my Florida residency when I did my one tour in San Diego. I rented, so the state of California didn't even know I existed.

    Good luck!

California is not the problem, the problem is where you live in the state.
In my remote rural county you need to smog only when the vehicle changes hands.

OK, I lied. California is the problem.

Here in TN. It's only appx. 6 of our 94 counties are required to get a smog test. Must have been a politician who came up with that idea. Once the st. legislature voted it in, within a yr, all the inspection stn.'s were up & running. Now last yr. the st. legislature voted to stop the smog tests, but it may be up to 4 yrs. before it actually stops. Must have been another politician's idea not to stop it now.

Lucky for me, I live in a county that doesn't require the test. I always thought they were a joke when I lived in the Portland area. I could fail at one station, drive across town and pass at another with my old van. Or, tweak the distributer so it ran like shit but passed. Go up the street, and put it back where it was.

Aux back up lights, Bed lights, Re-located trailer plug, Good dooby, a.k.a. jumper cable mod, Heated seats, back up camera,
They used to have Dino's in Mass. Now, they just plug into the OBD2 port.
They put cameras in the inspection bays now and take pics of the plate.

02 Tacoma, fixed with curse words.
The "Safety" inspections they have in the east coast and southern states would annoy me more than emissions. We have emissions testing here in IL and it takes about 5mins and I dont have to pay anything to get the test as they are state run. Even taking my smashed up solid axle swapped Tacoma crawler on 37s in they dont bat and eye except for groaning having to climb into it. My truck does have a habit lately of throwing a code a month before it's due which is annoying. I will take this over "safety" inspections at a private shop anyday.

No problem getting a smog test on my 02 Tacoma with a supercharged 4cyl , header and CAI . All they do is plug into the Diagnostic port and less than 5 minutes it's done and passed the test
