I looked through the FSM pages for the AC and didn't see another part above that. I believe that it just connects to the cowl, but I could be wrong. The door that switches between outside and inside air is inside that box.

    thank you!
upcoming spring project on figuring out how to remove all that without removing other stuffs back there
i do not have a passenger airbag so maybe won't be too much of an issue
do you have a windy rattle through that door when its open to the outside yet?
but i will goto the salvage yard first and remove one to be sure

Removing the fan assembly is simple, you only have to remove the glove box, a few screws, and a couple electrical connections. There’s one or two screws that are tricky to get to, but it’s more than doable without removing too much. I recently disassembled the entire system trying to track down a problem. The fan assembly butts up to the cowl, there’s nothing else above it. I’ve never noticed a windy rattle when the sore is open/set on fresh air. It could be possible that the cable controlling the door may be out of adjustment causing it not to hold securely?

IDK, i had a tonnish of the grey foam vent stuff blow on out at me this year, then the wind rattle flapping started at highway speeds
vents were blown out and it sorta stopped but i can still hear it knocking on bumps
i always drive with the fresh air coming in so i do not have to run the fan motor in the winter, perhaps less wear and tear onit!

i saw a pic on TW that somebody put some new cushioning around it somewhere
but not sure, this is what i have for grabbed TW pics so far

ive been having the same issue of the foam coming through the vents. It’s the foam that’s on all of the blend doors, the fresh air door, and also around some of the connections. At around 20 years old, it’s not surprising that it’s finally coming apart.

While investigating my problem, I did use some foam weather stripping around the doors I could reach, and some of the connections to try and partially fix some of the issue I was having.

The area in the one picture that is circled in red is the opening down into the fan assembly. Normally it’s covered by the sheet metal you see that they’ve cut and folded over, it’s not normally visible when you take the plastic cover off of the cowl.

i think the loss of the foam is inducing weird noises with temperature changes freezing to hot and back and expansions of the vent systems
    but idk

It very well could be! But taking that part of the system out is relatively easy...actually, pulling any of the heat/cooling system out is relatively easy, except for the heater core/heater core assembly. It’s not over the top hard, but it’s a bitch and time consuming.
