Both. Plus there are things like bumpers, sliders, skid plates and camping gear that add A LOT of weight to the truck.

MPG loss with bumpers and skid plates.
    MPG loss with bigger tires.
Hopefully re-gear will help the engine move the truck more efficiently.

But, if I was to get a tall but skinny tire would I need to regear? Like a 255 85r 17 for example

    Your tall skinny would be 255/80 in a 17 or 255/85 in a 16.

A re-gear depends on how you feel your truck drives after.....it’s all subjective. There are lots of Taco owners out there with 33’s and are quite happy with how their truck drives. If I didn’t have bumpers, skids, sliders, and a crap tonne of other weight, my truck would be livable with the 33’s. But because my truck is a camping/off-road rig, I think a re-gear would be beneficial.

I know this thread is old but...
Lots of talk about power loss for highway use and lowering MPG’s. Is there any performance loss for off-road/overlanding by going to 33’s, 255 or 285?

    255's lost me about 1-1.5mpg.

Very happy with the size though, won't change it for a while.

right, everyone was talking about the loss being at highway passing speeds, so I didn’t know how that would translate to low, 4wd speeds

You don't notice in low lol

There's a loss in passing/highway power. Mine is a manual and it's never really bothered me. If you're auto you'll likely want to regear in the future.

    @jonnyr

I agreed with what others have mentioned above. I have a 6-speed manual and really like the size but don’t like the power loss, especially on the highway. I can feel the engine lugging when going up hills so I drive in 5th right now most of the time. In low range it’s not as noticeable but I can’t wait until I’m re-geared in about 2 months.

37" load range E tires with stock gears is 0.6 seconds slower in a 0-60 with stock gears. 4.0 w/automatic. I tow often, sometimes very heavy stuff. The pedal commander helps a lot. I don't get all of the whining, I'm happy for what it is with the way it is.

4.0 6 speed here. Been on 255/85/16 load E for several years. Love that size on this setup. I have skids and sliders, and haul/tow weight regularly. Lots of mountain off road as well as road trips. Happy as a clam. Oh yeah, stock gears.

Also, the 2wd low range kit from @Up2NoGood has saved my clutch.

Interesting experience. I’ve found that with my truck (33’s, bumpers, sliders, skids, roof rack, etc) that the stock gears just don’t cut it. I usually drive in 5th gear on the highway because 6 just bogs the engine too much, especially at the 70mph I drive at. My truck is not loaded down with the additional 300-400lbs of camping gear yet either. In the future I also want to tow a 13-14’ inflatable boat which will make it worse. I can’t imagine doing all this with the stock gears.

    I can’t wait until I re-gear in a couple of months.
