Hey guys, i just put my rack together and am planning to paint it this weekend. I was looking at doing rustoleum truck bed liner but I wasn't sure if that would cause any problems. Specifically, does anyone know if the truck bed liner (since it's kind of bumpy/ rough) will mess up the measurements of the rails and not allow me to drop in t-nuts?

I wanted to do bedliner to give added protection, but perhaps just matte black paint would work better? Any thoughts/ experience with using bedliner to paint your prinsu racks?

from my experience your gonna have to scuff all the metal if you plan on using bed liner. it will chip and come off if put on smooth metal. i would suggest just a regular rust paint.

Quick question: when painting and doing prep, do you not sand the rails? I noticed you referred to "smooth metal." However, I had planned on sanding and putting primer on everything. Is this not recommended/ will it mess up the prinsu rails? I assume it's fine to do this with the 3" aluminum bars that make up the sides.

    Thanks!

scuffing the metal allows for better adhesion no matter what your spraying. it doesn't damage anything as your not sanding anything down, your just lightly scuffing to create superficial scratches on the material.
i have painted smooth metal with success only using primer and paint, no scuffing needed. my experience with bed liner was not as successful when i didn't scuff the metal. it chips where the paint does not.
    hope this helps.

For sure, thanks for the help. I'm thinking of just doing matte black rustoleum spray on the rails and then doing bedliner on the sides. I'll post pictures once done!

Rust-oleum makes a primer specifically for aluminum. I used two coats of this, two coats of Rust-oleumbed liner, and then two coats of Rust-oleum professional enamel satin black for my roof rack side plates. So far so good but they haven't been installed very long. I did the same process with different primer for my steel sliders and they are going strong. The Rust-oleum professional enamel satin black seals the bed liner and creates a super strong finish.

Did you get an answer? I'm having a bedrack fabbed as we speak and haven't figured out how I'm going to attach the prinsu to the bedrack.

Edit: disregard, I see the answer right above my question!

Awesome thread, super helpful and informative...this thread guided me and gave me inspiration to try my own...I didn't do a shell rack, but I built one to go top of the OEM Tacoma rack...I didn't have to put the OEM rack across to mount it, so I "think" it's a bit stronger than the original rating. Either way, it will free up bed space and allow me to utilize the roof or storage. Here are some pics:

This forum is awesome and has basically allowed me to do tons of upgrades/ mods on my own (which saves money) and to basically become my own mechanic (which saves more money haha). Keep it up everyone!

Has anyone attempted fabricating mounting brackets for the stock tacoma roof mounting locations. By the look of the angles seems like it be a little tricky.

Why not if you’re making sides make a big enough bend to accommodate mounting feet ? That’s what prinsu does is just have a bend.

Newlife I’ve tried that and made several mistakes it’s harder than it looks. I’m experimenting with a separate L shaped bracket now and either weld or bolt on to the side rails. Curious if anyone has done anything different

This guy used angle to attach his the factory 4Runner mounting holes (4:01). He just bolted them to the side plates.

I have a RTT on mine too, still going strong. I did add an internal "cage" as i like to go fast and the amount of shell flex scared me lol

Right on this is cool to know. I need to get my material ordered. Looks like there’s a sale right now. Or they have been discounted.
