So been searching around for a year and reading all about various suspensions. It has left me curious with one thing in particular. I see icon suspension kits on a number of off road shop trucks. You know, companies that sale numerous other brands. Or pros that are doing off road guiding and such. If Icon is so bad in TW’s opinion, why are the shops putting them on their trucks?

I should add; not looking for arguments. This is just a curiousness of mine.

Really? I wondered if that was the bottom line reason for it.

I guess that’s part of what I am trying to understand. I’ve figured out I don’t actually need Kings or ADS on my truck for my needs. A off road shop I trust has icon on a lot of their rigs that sit around. So my thinking is perhaps they aren’t as awful as people say.
    Good inspirational post!

I’ve read bad things about every brand out there. All in all, go with your gut. I’m choosing icon for my tundra. They seem to hold up way better in the north East.

Shops don’t really need to trust anyone. They have the resources to deal with annoying issues.

Here’s an example. I used to race dirt bikes and everyone would run Wiseco pistons because all the pros used them. Their bikes would have constant issues. The pros ran them cause they got paid to and they had a full time mechanic to deal with the problems. For the average weekend warrior, they had to tear their bike apart every weekend because of those stupid things.

The point is, just cause the pros are using it doesn’t mean it’s actually good. I run ADS because I was able to swing a really good deal on them. I’d run ICON if I got them cheap or free too. Otherwise I’m spending my money on Kings.

Have a set of icon 2" springs on the rear of my wife's 5th gen 4runner, paired with a 5100 top ring front lift. We have no complaints. Drives great and way better than the spacer that I originally out in the rear.

A spacer lift and a spring lift aren’t even remotely the same thing though. No doubt it rides better. I think the question is why run such an expensive setup when so many people bash that particular brand. One other thing to consider is, a lot of people will bad talk things they can’t afford, or they’ll jump on the “ let’s bash brand x” bandwagon. As long as you are happy, that’s all that really matters.

The shock and spring are separate in the rear of a 4runner... You know that right?

I guess my main question was are they really as bad as people make them out to be and if so, why do so many off road shops or guides use them?... I think both those questions have been answered.

We will be working on a Icon vs King vs Fox article. In that article we will dive into the parts used on each and explain the differences to let people make a decision for themselves. The interweb has a lot of good information, a lot of incorrect information and a ton of opinions.

Any chance you could add BP-51s to that comparison?

There are a handful of products out there that we would like to investigate, but can't do them all. At least not right now.
