Has anyone had any luck finding a smoked LED third brake light for a regular cab Tacoma? Everything I can find is for access cabs and the mounting screws are spaced out too wide.

So I’m about to pull my light off and take a look because I finally found something that may have been the answer I was looking for. I wasn’t aware the screws on the stock light were only for the cover so when I looked at the light I ordered without pulling it off I assumed it wouldn’t fit and everything I found on Amazon specifically said for access cabs only. Lol rookie mistake but thank you!

Yeah, you have to pull down the headliner, at least partially, to get to the nuts on the side to remove the fixture.

I did my 3rd brake light around a year ago on my single cab, and it worked fine but it took a little bit of rigging.

I used a brake light similar to this one:
    https://www.amazon.com/Third-Light-1995-2015-Toyota-Tacoma/dp/B07FF1ML1D/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=1997+tacoma+3rd+brake+light&qid=1582674475&replacementKeywords=3rd+brake+light&sr=8-6&vehicle=1997-76-1037------------&vehicleName=1997+Toyota+Tacoma

As far as mounting goes, I couldn’t be bothered to try to reuse my old mounting clips and so fourth so I ended up using toggle anchors such as what you would find on a wall. I had to also buy longer screws which I found at ace. It also doesnt matter if it’s for an ex cab or so fourth, still the same brake light same wiring so fourth. Mines help up fine for the past year and a half and i have no complaints so far.
    Good luck!

You don’t need to remove your headliner for the way I did it! Also easier to remove and replace in the future!

do you have any pictures of how yours came out? I ordered the same light and I’m clueless trying to figure out how to drop the headliner every thing I try I find it’s like glued on and I’m not trying to to tear it. Also how did you remove your old light without removing the headliner?

Yeah, I did mine without even having to go inside of my cab. Basically removing it’s simple, you take off the two bolts holding on the 3rd brake light then they’re ls gonna be some mounting tape holding it on as well. As far as that goes I just used fishing line to get behind it and a razor and it worked fine. You probably one be able to save your oem brake light when you remove it unless you get new mounting tape on the back. The new light should come with mounting tape and so fourth, and once you get your old one off, you plug the harness into the new one, remove the backing on the mounting tape and basically just stick it on. But before you do this make sure you have the toggle anchors on your screws and you can just screw it in once you stick it. Also make sure to clean the area where the old brake light was with some alcohol or something because it’ll help the new one stick better.

here’s some pictures of how mine turned out,

the grey stuff on the surrounding parts of my light is just glue residue I didn’t remove when I did it, and also I used some caulk on the top so I could seal out any water that may come in in case.

goodluck I’m here if you need anything else

How did you take off the two bolts? Or do you meant the screws that’s hold the light cover on? Basically I took off my cover and can’t see from the outside of my truck how to remove it. Everywhere I look says I have to remove the headliner to get to a couple of nuts that have to be removed to actually take the assembly off

I meant the two screws in front. I did mine about a a year and a half ago so I don’t remember much but I remember I used a razor to get the sticky backing off then basically I just pulled the 3rd brake light off. I may have done it wrong but using toggle anchors and longer screws for me worked fine and I have no complaints at all

Ok I’m gonna give it a try tomorrow then I started doing the headliner and it’s almost impossible to remove without ripping it. Thanks for the advice!
