    Hey everyone,
New here. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on the 2020 DCLB OR. Carplay seems to have addressed my Entune concerns but I'm still concerned about the transmission shifting issues. Have they been solved in 2020?

I've been reading several posts. This may have been discussed and I couldn't find the thread. Thanks, like I said hoping to join this great community soon.

Me neither. And if there were any, I'm sure they're fixed by now. It is 2020...

seriously. same tranny that is in my 2016. may be some software updates but the tranny does up shift too soon, some point out it hunts for gears too much. test drive the crap out of it and also drive it with ECT on. has all this been fixed for 2020, no, the tranny is what it is. i am a happy camper as long as i drive with ECT on.

My 2020 is absolutely fine. The only way to determine if the Tacoma is right for you is to test drive it. I've had a first and a 3rd Gen - loved the 1st Gen and love the new one even more.

You guys just going to act like you've never heard of the transmission issues that people with earlier models have been complaining about? They have an entire aftermarket tune built just to correct the issue

Transmission updates in 2017 alleviated the issue

I never had a problem with my trans on my 19, just had a bad shake from the rear brake area they never could fix, so they bought it back.

I never said that. I answered the question relative to MY 2020 and MY 1st Gen. I can't speak to other's issues or what was done earlier by Toyota to address them other than by restating what other people have said. So, I speak only to my personal experience.

The shifting in my 2020 OR is definitely better than the shifting was in my 2018 OR. Absolutely no question about it. The mechanicals may be the same, but Toyota changed something in the code. In fact, running 91 octane with ECT on *almost* makes OVTune unnecessary as far as I'm concerned, for shifting fixes anyway. Almost. Toyota modified SOMETHING that affects the 2020 3.5L AT in a positive way.

OV Tune was developed to improve on the behavior of the transmission. To make it perform better. Not that there was an "issue" to begin with. Most, if not all things, can be improved upon... My transmission has never had any "issues". It has always behaved as it was designed to, which is perfectly fine with me. But I get it. Most people complain about things that are non-issues. If "it" doesn't do what "you" want, something must be wrong with "it", right? I hear you. There's always an "issue", lol... Just think, if someone would only develop a tune to keep people from bitching and crying about everything all of the time, that would be awesome.

Ha. :) I know dead horse beaten...I have test driven it and didn't notice much of a problem but the automotive press all seem to hate it. Thanks for the feedback on the ECT though. You can shift the auto manually too if hilly or towing, right?

I also suspect the delay isn't completely the transmission. The "seemless" shift from Otto to Atkinson engine mode with engine load with the intake valve may be part of the issue too. If it's helping to save fuel then I'm likely going to be more tolerant.

The 2020 transmission 'tune' is definitely an improvement over my previous 2017. Both V6/Auto 4X4s

There were tons of complaints of the early 3rd gen owners with transmission "issues" (all programming and driving, which is an issue, but nothing wrong mechanically). Toyota started working on it there have been a few TSB reflashes along the years. I have a 2020 OR Short Bed - it drives differently than my mazda 3 I traded in, but it took me all of a few weeks to be used to how it drives and not it just drives "normally" for me.

I have the opposite issue more often than this. I drive on 25-35mph roads most of the time, if I use ECT it holds it in a low gear for way longer than I thought it would, and I've noticed when it does downshift on an uphill grade on the highway it will hold the 4th gear longer than I expected it to. Some people have reported they drive in sequential 5th on the highway and it won't hunt much at all, gets better MPG (because it's not hunting). As said, I've only noticed some minor "hunting" so far, and nothing that any other car wouldn't do - downshift on an uphill grade (shocking). I just drove about 250 miles round trip this past weekend, almost all highway or B-Roads and only had an "issue" with down shift/hunting once, or when I'd be dicking around playing with dropping it into S or ECT modes.

Long of the short, if I had to go through buying new again tomorrow, I might choose a different trim or engine option, but I'm happy with the tacoma.
