i would say yes it holds the gear a little too long but for me is better than shifting into 3rd just after completing a right turn.
also same here on uphill 4th gear.

I actually was on the fence between a Tacoma and GX460 to replace my 4th gen 4Runner and main hesitation on Tacoma was transmission. It is self learning so it will learn how you drive and mine is already starting to shift when I would prefer and I have only put about 300 miles on it. I would say it is not much of a concern now that I have purchased, I love the truck.

    Thanks! This helps.

Does everyone run OVTune? But the OVTune 3D maps look much smoother than the Toyota stock ones. I can imagine that makes a difference. My original question was did Toyota spend some time remapping the MY20 engine/tranny. It sounds like they did. I did a Cobb ECU flash on my '04 WRX in '07 back in the day and it was amazing from stock. Obviously no Taco turbo...too bad.

My '19 only has 1,600 miles and I drive it like I stole it from a stop until 2nd or 3rd gear. Gas is cheap.
Hopefully the transmission "learns" that I dont want to putt around like a Prius driver. Just go baby, GO!!!

I haven’t seen anyone with a 2020 who said they run OvTune - doesn’t mean they aren’t out there. Again, I have no issues with my 2020 Pro transmission. It shifts as it was designed to shift. As others have said, does it always shift exactly when I’d shift if it was a manual transmission? No. But it runs as it was designed to. I’ve driven (legally) since 1973. 3 speed on the column, 4 on the floor, 5 speeds and 6 speed manuals and automatics. I had a Gen 1 and have driven earlier Gen 3s. I’ve never felt there were “problems” or “issues” with them. Have others felt so? Sure. Has Toyota made some adjustments in response to complaints? Yes. In the end you either like the transmission or you don’t. It’s all personal feel. Test drive the hell out of it before you buy, or buy a MT and eliminate the issue. All each of us can tell you is our own experience....it shouldn’t impact your choice at all. Whether you like it or not is what’s important.

Truck moves when I push the gas pedal. What's the problem?

    No.

I've only owned the 2020 and I will say the transmission behaves differently than my previous vehicles with automatics, newest being a 2019 4Runner. Sometimes it does things that I would consider "weird" compared to older transmissions, but it's not anything I would label as a "problem". It's the only automatic I've owned that has six gears. It just is what it is. The truck is comfortable to drive, I can put shit in the bed, and I can tow my 3000lb+ travel trailer much more confidently than in the 4Runner.

When I slightly depress the pedal, the truck moves forward; when I slam it to the floor to pass someone on the freeway, it gets up and goes and I pass it on the freeway. It may take 1/15th of a second to decide that shifting down one gear isn't enough and I can tell it's making that decision, but it isn't enough to put me into any precarious situations.

And hell, if it squeezes out another 1 or 2 mpg more than the 4Runner, then great!

Also, go test drive a Ford Ranger with the 10 speed. You wanna talk about a weird feeling transmission? That thing is all sorts of strange when you gun it. That little turbo four cylinder has a lot of pep though for moving a vehicle that large.

Newbie Taco owner, my 2020 transmission seems to shift fine and have had zero issues but I do not have any large inclines (hills, mtn etc.) I read about the previous issues researching my buy and also read that Toyota took care of the problem. But TFL Channel talks like their is still issues with the tranny? I kinda think they must be uninformed?

nah. I considered it but for what like 800 bucks when I just said I liked how it was shifting? Meh. Not worth it. Maybe it’ll drive better for some people and be worth it. I’m happy stock.

Find a Tacoma you can rent for a few days if you're concerned about it.

Very happy with my 2020 DCLB OR. It’s my first Tacoma so I’m not sure much about previous models shifting but it’s been great for me so far. My only issue has been breaking vibrations from 30-50 and down. Make sure you check that out during the test drive. I’m going to have to have them address it at my first service.

don't forget to find one that does not vibrate when you brake
don't forget to find one that does not vibrate when you accelerate
don't forget to find one that does not howl in the rear at 55 mph
don't forget to find one that does not howl in 4wd
and so on someone else can add to the list.........

I've had my '20 army green Pro a little less than 3 weeks. It drives great, shifts when its supposed to and I love it. If there are some little girls on here complaining about their trucks shifting, then they should have bought a MT. I've driven too many miles on MT as a daily driver. I'm at an age that I want to relax with a AT.

I've not driven a model before the 2020, and even though it is different from most trucks I've driven, I enjoy it. There are times where I feel the shifts aren't as intuitive, but it will do what you need it to. I find the real time fuel economy graph readout to be pretty addictive. I can drive it like a grandpa and use the hills to my advantage for fuel economy. I recently averaged 25 mpg on a 220 mile trip through north and central MS hills on mixed interstate and rural roads, ranging my speed between 62 and 78. My 70 mile daily commute in mixed driving has returned no less than a 20 mpg tank average and most are 21 mpg average. This is on the TRD OR version with no air dam, and with about 600 lbs of gear and people.

When I need it to move I've learned the transmission's behavior enough to know how to accelerate quickly. I've never even had it above 3k rpm (rarely to 2.5) as I still feel a new engine should be broken in before stressing it much. I am now approaching 3k miles on the truck and will likely change the oil at 5k instead of the 10k recommended by Toyota (throwing money away for peace of mind).

When towing in ECT mode, I felt that the truck shifted just as it should.

In summation, even though it took some getting used to, I think the truck adapts well to most situations and has a split personality that I enjoy. However, I have almost bypassed cruise control entirely. I'd rather do it myself than the abrupt, overcompensating down shifts.

I hope this helps someone in the market for a Tacoma!

This is where my main concern with the trans lies. It's when using ACC at highway speeds. ACC is great and I've learned to live with the truck dropping 2 gears and then sitting in 4th for no reason.
