I did a leak test using the new smoke canister I got from Amazon. Only leak I could find was on the intake tube I circled below. I could not find this plastic nipple on Toyota's website, and I'm not sure it would help even if I replaced it. Anyone think I should just RTV seal it in there?

I would try to jb weld it or a plastic epoxy, if you have to buy the part anyway couldnt hurt to try!

I'm trying to think and remember without looking and cheating, but that looks like it would allow unmetered air into the system that isn't accounted for by the MAF sensor and so it runs lean and ECU can throw..... P0420? Is that the right one?

 

I've been running lean for a long time and I finally decided to do something about it. It's never been enough to throw a code on my rig though. I'm running about +8 LTFT at idle and at 0.0 when driving. If this doesn't fix my issue I'll take off the manifold this weekend and see what I can find under there that may be leaking.

 

Hell yeah that vac leak can have that effect. Nice find man. How'd you like that smoke machine? You happy with it? If so, tell us the brand or a link or something. Been wanting to add one to the tools for a few years but have always figured a work around. It would've saved me a bit of time, a lot actually lol

 

Yeah, well if it sealed the leak it would be worth it. I wonder if the plastic nipple comes with a new air tube. I think I'll try grey RTV first and see if that solves my issue.

 

If you dont like the result of the grey rtv you shouldn't have an issue using that jb weld or a similar 2 part epoxy like homie above mentioned. And you can even dremel or sand excess off if you need, with that epoxy stuff. I've used plenty of that stuff over the years

here. Works as advertised and is very nice quality. I almost sprung for the $300 unit that comes with a float gauge that tells you how severe the leak is, but I just couldn't justify the cost.

The thing looks great! Not bad at all for a 120 bucks wow, I'm kind of excited to use it lol

 

Rtvs made to be compressed between 2 surfaces like a part, not really gooped over a crack BUT it may help you trouble shoot your problem.

 

The tube and nipple aren't cracked, they just don't form a tight seal in the hole in the air tube. The intake tube is only 5 years old, so I'm not sure why that plastic nipple is giving me this problem. I went ahead and gooped it up, we'll see if it holds. I suspect I have a larger intake leak somewhere down below the manifold.

Yeah it worked great! It's better than any of the homemade solutions I saw on YouTube, so was worth the 100 bucks to me to not have to use a cigar, or whatever.

The mineral oil smells bad when it is vaporized, though - be prepared to air out the garage after.

P0171 is the system too lean code, P0420 is catalytic system efficiency below threshold.

I know because both those two codes have haunted me in the past lol
