Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread. I have a 2018 Tacoma, I have an issue where the key is not detected after closing the door and entering back in while car is on. But this only happens when the key is on the driver side. Passenger side no problem. Key still operates as normal from out side. I can lock and unlock with the remote and the keyless entry system on the door handle.

    What I did:
-Replaced key fob battery, didn’t work
-Checked car battery voltage 12.7v with engine off
    -Used spare key, same result
-Disconnected battery for 10-15 min, nothing changed

I do have an aftermarket sound system, did door all around and subwoofers. I have an amp under drivers seat, and passenger seat. But I had installed this way before this happened so it couldn’t be that.

I do have leds in various locations of the truck. Rear tail lights, side mirrors, map and dome, front turn signals, low beam and license plate lights not sure if leds could cause this. I’ve had the map, dome, side mirror and low beam headlights for a while. I recently put in the front turn signals, and license plate light leds last weekend from this post.

I tried looking for threads, but most of it was saying to change battery in the key fob, I did. Not sure if toyota will bring up my sound system and leds being part of the problem. The only time they’re open is when I am at work.

    Thanks in advance

Since you fucked with the electrical system, all bets are off.

    Good Luck.

I lil harsh, but also a lot right.
Unfortunately you're going to have to go retrace all those steps of electrical mods

Has any magnet been close to your key fob? Maybe put the fob closer to the start button ?

I just watched the video, what happens if you put your keys in your pockets?
Not sure why you'd want your keys jiggling around in the door handle anyway. Also try removing some of that stuff on your keyring.

I removed the recent LED’s I installed. Still the same. Not sure if I hit a pot hole hard enough that one of the key fob sensors got loose in the cab. Anyone know where the sensors are located for detecting the key fob?

I removed everything and still no luck. I usually hook it to my belt loop on my left side. I put it there as an example.

Negative, the key works but this only happens after I turn the engine on, leave the truck (ie closing gate) then getting back in. But if I just start the truck and go this doesn’t happen.

After watching the video, in my opinion, there's nothing wrong. Key fob is performing as designed. You're putting it in the door pocket with a lot of metal keys around it. This is causing interference with the sensors. Try it without the metal keys while sitting from the passenger side (you may have tried this already with the spare fob - I'll test this in my truck too). :notsure: Otherwise, the door pocket might be out of range... Correction, it seems like something is wrong...

I usually have on my belt loop but it does the same thing. I put it there since I have no belt loop on.

Interesting, so key not detected is happening when you open and shut the door with the fob in front of the steering wheel?

You might want to check my post here to see if the red light is flashing when it's supposed to.

I don't know, but I'm wondering if your boombox equipment is blocking/interfering with it, mainly the amp and it's wiring.

I tried my fob in the door pocket, and it works fine. So, something is not right...

Update: I’ve been doing a few tests and it seems like the way I ran my wires after adding the sub amp was interfering with something behind the back of the center console (nearest to the engine) I think there is a receiver there for the key fob. So I went and moved the wires all the way down and tucked it nicely and now my key detects again without that error message. Just did this tonight, I’ll see tomorrow if the issue continues. At least I know whats causing it. I will be re routing my speaker wires to the LOC if it happens again.

Edit: It detects when radio volume is at 0. So I know the radio signal is interfering with the receiver for the key. I guess the re routing will be mandatory, time to pull out the head unit again :fingerscrossed:

Looks like there is a sensor somewhere between the head unit and the floorboard, guessing that's the one that's wigging out with all the added speaker wiring running to the head unit?

Yes I think #2 nearest to the engine is the one. I should’ve ran the wires straight through the passenger side instead of just looping it from driver side to passenger. It cant be the driver door since the door handle sensing still works. It works when I wiggle the wires around.
Thank you, I’ll look at it.

So I have a 18 Tacoma. This same thing happen to me. It took me a minute to figure it out but it was something to do with my door being open when I turned the truck off. So I basically did what did the same thing but in reverse motion/opposite of how it ended up this way. This corrected the problem. Now a year later I did it again but it’s not correcting it. And new updates on this?
