My last Tacoma was an '11 MGM AC TRD Sport. Now im in a '13 AC SR5. I JUST let a set of those wheels get away from me a couple weeks ago. Your pic confirms my lust and pisses me off at the same time!

PS, I grew up in Andovah. Go Bruins!

That plastic cover on top of Tacoma 4.0's is to quiet the engine down in the interior of the truck. It doesn't matter where the sound is occurring at because sound waves aren't directional until high frequencies are achieved.

They aren't directional...but they still have to reach your ears to matter. You can deaden the firewall, which your ears are on the other side of, without trapping heat in the bay to the degree the material under the hood would.

I'm not saying the material isn't reducing sound to the cabin entirely, just suggesting it's minimal and not worth the increase in heat.

But I'm no engineer...always willing to learn.

When the cooling system is functioning properly the engine is equally hot in the summer in the desert as it is in the winter in snow country. Even if the engine compartment does get hotter with sound deadening on the hood it is irrelevant. The flatter and the bigger the part is (like a hood) the more that sound deadening will help. Any self respecting hot rod builder uses sound deadening on the hood. All high end vehicles use sound deadening on the hood. I personally believe sound deadening catching on fire by itself under a hood is impossible, it doesn't get hot enough.

Dont get me wrong, the Iggy panel is badass, and if I ever have enough switches I will get one, but why not knock out your existing blanks first? LOL :notsure: :stirthepot:

    That makes sense to me

i'll take your word for it

Not exactly. High end vehicles line the hood with an insulator intended to control the dissipation of heat in the engine bay, or, the cooling of the engine. It's engineered with an R value and is essentially part of the cooling system. It's also flame retardant. The fact that it absorbs sound is a bonus.

Agreed. But dude didn't say it spontaneously combusted. The point is if there is no flammable material, there is no flame. You're probably right that what that ricer used was not intended to be near a heat source. Looks like what @'14RC used is foiled lined, which can't hurt.

Different strokes for different folks? Also maybe because he already sourced the switches he wanted, but they're not sized right for Toyota OEM slots.

Sound deadening under the hood of a vehicle is 100% possible and can be done safely. Foil lined butyl rubber is safe for usage in that area, but may not always stick due to the weight of it, being unsupported, and constantly under levels of heat that would reduce the ability of the sticky compound's adherence.

Most people use a foil lined foam, the foam acts as an insulating and deadening layer. If that dude's car caught fire, I bet he just used closed cell foam, which if it fell onto the block, or got wound into the belt and been subject to friction, may have caught fire pretty easily.

can you described how you made the plate to fit in the cubby? I’m desperate to do this for my ‘06 manual...

You guys are getting the drift -- this is an aluminum backed butyl rubber which is not designed as a heat nor acoustic insulator (though it will inherently have these properties to some small degree). It adds mass to the panel which then requires more energy to start vibrating and making noise. Hood vibrations can be transferred to other parts of the vehicle which is how I am noticing a reduction.

I'd bet that guy with the ricer used foam or some other insulating fiber that either wasn't meant to be in the engine bay or might have dropped down onto a turbo or exhaust manifold and ignited.

Here's a quote from the seller: "Mat66 has a working temperature from- 49 degrees to 212 degrees F with allowance for short term heating of up to 392 degrees F."

Yesterday I went ahead and pulled the trigger on some new tires. Just bought the Toyo ATII's again (same exact ones I had). I got about 4.5 years and 50k miles out of my original set. They were at 4/32 tread depth so I could've gotten a little more time out of them but my fronts had a nasty vibration issue at highway speeds. The shop that did my alignment said he thinks it was cupping due to my old stock struts not working properly (the shop replaced my struts and did the alignment afterwards). So with the tread depth at 4/32 and the vibrations I just said screw it and got all new. Anyways, sliiiiightly disappointed in the tire life duration, I think they are rated at 65k miles, but I do love the Toyo's look and performance.

Dobinson’s coils and shocks. SOS sliders, ditch light brackets, and front skid. Rigid ditch lights. BFG KO(dos) More minor stuff.
Love the look of a stuffed wheel well.

There’s actually two platforms. One for the charger to sit on and one for the phone. Made templates out of some small canvas boards I got at Walmart. Transferred the pattern to this abs plastic I got on Amazon.

    Install Bay 89-00-9031 ABS... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007WTF02?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I made the top one a bit bigger because the inside bevels in on the sides and I didn’t want too big of a gap then I could just do a bit of trimming. For the smaller one for the charger, I had to cut a small piece to fit under it leaning against the back of the cubby so the back side wouldn’t droop and the charger and phone would be level.
