Alpine used to be a good company with absurdly expensive stuff. But anymore, a moderately priced head unit from Pioneer or Kenwood will waste an Alpine on audio quality.

Its pretty nice weve been running the same one in our camery. My GF has been complaining that car play drops every now and then. I haven't experienced it though. Wish I would have gotten xm for it while I was at it.

i am trying to find the kenwood flip around cassette deck i had from 98-'07, its probably in the garage somewhere
it was not a pullout but the face flipped around, hooked to 6 disk mag changer under seat, it was a nice setup
the mag changer still ejects the cartridge!

Just a little clip showing how the cameras work. I need to fix the lines and figure out how to mirror the front camera. I thought it was pretty cool though.

    I like it so far.
Pros: Hands free (the reason I bought it) Ease of streaming music.

Cons: Daytime viewing angle, not so great.

On the viewing angle... it did make a difference, though, when I snipped the daytime running lights wire. (I always ran with my headlights all the way on because the DRLs have the headlights on but no tail lights). I've noticed that when I turn the lights on the screen dims. I belive that was a function of the wiring harness. Lights being on assumes it's darker and there is an auto dim feature.

All in all, the head unit is good (for now) will probably look to upgrade to a unit with a tilt feature and volume KNOB... I hate volume buttons. At that point, this one will probably go in my son's T4R.

Are you happy with the backup camera mount, any lessons learned with that? I'm thinking to do something similar with an aftermarket locking handle.

Yeah not really thrilled with it. I need to adjust it so it catches less tailgate and more of whats behind me. The camera came with several rubber gaskets to do just that I just haven’t gotten back to it. Lessons learned would be to run your wires in whatever flexible conduit you’re going to use before you run all the wires in and under the truck. In retrospect I probably would have been happier with the license plate bracket type camera. Would have been one hell of a lot easier.

Edit: following up at 3+ months. Still thrilled with the HU and i adjusted the camera to improve the viewing angle but until yesterday I never considered that mounted in the tailgate, the BU camera is worthless if you have to back up when the tailgate is down whereas a license plate mount might work better.

Thanks for that. I hadn’t really considered lic plate cams, but you raise excellent points. Now I’ll check if they still have them at Costco.

I really like the look of the tailgate mount camera. Can you post the link where you got this camera? Thanks so much.

I got all my stuff on Amazon. I picked the Jensen HU because of the brand name and it had the features I wanted like a knob for volume vs buttons, DVD, USB input, mic for hands free, decent customer reviews from Crutchfield and Amazon and the price ($87 because the box was dented) I decided on this camera because my neighbor’s 3rd gen has the camera in the tailgate handle and I thought it was cool and it came with everything I thought I would need, clamp-on wire splices for the backup lights (although I’ll probably remove them and solder the connections) the wedge shaped gaskets to adjust the angle, a little plastic prybar thingy to remove body panels, a plug to disconnect the camera so I can remove the tailgate should the need ever arise and plenty long enough cable to reach the back of the HU while snaking the cable run along the frame and under the dash and the all important customer reviews.
