Transmission issue when parked on a hill? Warrantee?

So I take my 2017 in to the dealer this morning. When parked on a hill and I shift into D the truck rolls back a bit and I hear a loud clicking noise (maybe 5-6 clicks) until the gear catches and the truck goes into 1st gear.

I've had it 25 months and 21K miles.

The woman checking me in at the desk says it's a 2017 and not covered as it's over 3 years???
    2020 - 2017 = 3 in my book.

Not sure what's wrong with the truck, or what to think about the warrantee.

Nothing wrong, unfortunately. That is how Hill Assist works on the ATs. It is funny that it allows roll back at all, but that is how it works according to other posts. What you are hearing is the ABS system firing off and not quite doing the intended function.

I thought maybe it was a hill assist noise, but I thought that was only something on Manual transmissions.
I didn't think an automatic should need hill assist.

I tried to text/call the dealer yesterday to see if it was something normal and I didn't have to bring it in
but that was no help. Text didn't get answered, talked to a woman who wasn't familiar.

I bet they try to stick me with a charge for diagnosing it.

Warranty goes by first date of ownership. Not by calendar. For example, my 2017 entered my ownership Sept 2017. That means I still have 6 month left on my warranty. I won't get the mileage though. Only have 37,000kms and warranty is good for 60,000kms.

Yes. The SR (2016 and 2017) and Sport MTs have Hill Assist, but it seems to function very differently and does not allow any roll back. It works in the forward gears, neutral, and reverse, if facing downhill. It seems to line lock the rear brakes using hardware inside the ABS module. It does not work with the key out / ignition off. As far as I know it cannot be turned off, which is a bit unfortunate depending on individual preferences.

The OR and Pro MTs do not have Hill Assist. The only reason that comes to mind there is that they have the electronic brake booster, which is completely different.

The AT system works differently, but you have some form of it. I am not certain if it is on all AT models or not. From my recollection, it seems that folks with ORs and Pros only post about it? I could be wrong.

Warranty is 36 months from purchase date. Maybe she cannot count. I have the TRD offroad and if I am on my steep driveway and put it in drive and don't get on the gas before it rolls back a bit sounds like all hell breaking loose as the ABS system starts hammering away. If I let off the gas a bit then push accelerator again it stops once I have a little momentum up

Use your parking brake. When did you purchase your truck?

I'm confused. Are you not holding the brakes until the car actually goes into gear? Or is the car already in gear and it rolls back when you let off the brake? It sounds like hill start assist and it's working normal. Caught me off guard the first time it happened too. And if there is an issue with the transmission wouldn't it be covered under the drivetrain 5 year warranty?

Thanks for the link to the other threads (i did try to search but also sometimes a dork).

All other cars I'ver ever owned with an automatic transmission would immediately
start to move forward when put into "D" drive. The only thing stopping the car would be my foot on the brake.

It only happens when I pick up my son at college. It's a fairly steep hill maybe 30-40 degrees.
it is park, I put my foot on the brake and I shift into drive. I take my foot off the brake and the
car goes backwards with clicking until I give it some gas.

Why would an automatic in drive go backwards?

Low engine torque at idle and torque converter is decoupled.

The torque converter at idle RPMs can only give you so much forward pull. It is the same as if you are on a flat and let off the brake and coast forward. It is not a lot.

On all my past ATs, there is a slope at which the TC force at idle cannot hold the car.

I have never driven an AT Taco, but the 1st Gen Tundra that I took on a short drive acted like any other AT. I do not know if it had Hill Assist or not. Now, the rubber band electronic throttle on an incline caused me to chirp the tires getting going from an uphill stop sign.

Gravity is stronger than the friction in the converter in this case. The torque converter connects the engine to the transmission and is a fluid coupling. If can slip and is totally normal. The sounds you hear are the ABS system trying to hold the car in place.

Try holding your foot on the brake in Drive for longer than you are doing now.

Use the emergency brake as others above have mentioned and allow your rear brakes to take the load off the parking pawl inside the transmission . When you park on a hill and refuse to use the parking brake , the weight of the truck is placed on a tiny parking gear . This creates metal fragments inside your transmission pan that eventually get sucked up into the transmission pump . The parking gear was designed to be used with your emergency brakes .
You also wear out all the components in your shifter .
Start the truck on a hill with the e brake applied, place your foot on the brakes
Then put the transmission into gear and have your foot ready on the gas pedal
This will greatly reduce the chances of the truck rolling back because you already have your foot on the gas pedal .
I have repaired many transmissions caused by failure to use the ebrake .

These trucks were also notorious for being low on transmission fluid from the factory . When parked on a hill , this issue is amplified and could be one of the reasons you are rolling back more than other vehicles you have driven.
When you shift into drive range , the transmission should go into gear immediately with no hesitation the same as if you were parked flat .
If this is the case , I would be talking to the dealer about a possible low fluid condition

Next time. Keep the hand brake on, put it in drive and then release the hand brake.

The OR's and Pros do not have Hill assist as they have Clutch Start Cancel instead. Allows you to start the truck in gear to crawl uphill.
