And oh yeah, I also agree that the Tacoma has grown too big. Although that hasn't stopped me from buying two of 'em.

When I last lived in/near a bigger city (Baltimore), I had a 2007 Tacoma regular cab 2wd 4cyl manual. Great truck, but I was single; parking and insurance sucked so I bought a motorcycle and rode that every day instead. Sold the truck and lived cage free for a couple years until I moved to Alaska. Best years of my life. Having a motorcycle as my only vehicle was extremely easy to do and made life so simple and happier.

If you live in the city, embrace it. Get something small to run around on and get a transit pass and Uber and leave driving to the rest.

 

My last truck was a regular cab Dakota.

It sucked in great multitudes, absolutely zero room for anything if I had a passenger. If you got fast food, someone had to hold the bag in their lap.

Had the seat back as far as it would go and still was up against the steering wheel, and I'm not a big guy at 5' 11" and 170 pounds.

 

Forgot about them. Those were cool and the market kind of did like it since the 1st gen Tundra (and the 2nd Tacoma kind of too) is about the same size. I think the T100 was just a step child that came too late. It shared parts with the torsion rod IFS 1986+ trucks so the platform was at the end of its life in the USA by the time they started making the truck in 1992.

 

Absolutely. I spent 5 years with only a Bicycle for Transportation when I was 20 . When I bought a car again (modified Eclipse Turbo) I still mostly rode my bike and was able to modify the car for Performance since I didn't drive it much. I also had Motorcycles for about 10 years and that's a whole different dimension as far as speed and fun. My daily driver/Work car is a Subaru Impreza and it works so well as a city car that I kept it instead of trading it in. I've had vehicles bigger than my access cab Tacoma so I can make it work if anything ever happens to my little Subaru. It's just personal preference, I like smaller trucks. I'll admit, I did enjoy my Sierra for a while and I'm glad I had one big V-8 Truck in my lifetime since it was on my list of cars to own before I die.

 

When I was looking to buy last year I was also looking for the smallest, lowest height truck. I had been a Toyota guy since 1971 and loved my 1981 pickup back in the day. My wife had also complained about the height of my FJ that I had just traded in on something else.

After much consideration I wound up with a great deal on a DCSB and at first, thought it was too big for my use- weekend Home Depot runs and runs to our second home, etc.

But soon after buying the Tacoma we got a new rescue dog who’s now up to 70 lbs, and I’m glad I didn’t get the access cab. He’s loving jumping into and stretching out on the back seat (got a full coverage seat cover) while all our purchases and luggage get sent to the truck bed. And the wife isn’t so unhappy with the truck height as she used to be since she says how much smoother and refined the Tacoma’s ride is over the FJ.

 

Same here in NJ. Everything I found used was $20,000 or higher! and I still had to worry about sliding under on the ground looking for the start of frame rot. That, and the fact I got a brand new truck in the trim and color I wanted for $24,500 decided it for me.

 

Yeah I'm on team "This truck is about the perfect size!". Large enough to fill up with camping gear, the dog, and a buddy and get off the grid for a couple days, but still small enough to drive down most narrow trails and such. And after spending all week driving around the city in my F150 work truck it feels positively nimble in urban driving situations to me.

 

I’ll agree the Toyota’s have got significantly bigger. But there’s no way in hell my 6’4 frame would ever fit in those tiny trucks. I actually tried in this one and my knees hit the steering wheel to the point I want able to turn let alone change gears (couldn’t move to hit the clutch). So I support the they had to get bigger to keep up with the size of people simply because not only are we bigger but there weren’t nearly as many people over 6’ back then.

Yeah, I went from an '86 SR5 4WD single cab 22re 5 speed to an "11access cab V6 six speed. The new truck felt like a bloated hog compared to the old truck with the 4cyl. It was light and zippy. Guess i should have test drove a 2.7l
But i am over all happy with my 3rd gen. I will say the 3.5l v6 with a six speed manual trans does harken back to the old 22re days and it does feel zippy. It likes to live in the higher RPMs.

Miss my 98 regular cab. Fit everywhere and was like driving a 4-wheeler with a top. I don’t, however, miss driving around with my work bag on my lap when i had a passenger, because there was zero extra space anywhere. Box was also incredibly shallow.
