Shop the discounts for hotels. Military/gov't employee is usually not the best. My wife has a bunch of points banked so we usually use and rebuild those. I think we've got some platinum membership thing with Holiday Inn chain. And if you can swing that with a stay on a military base you can build more membership points and get their rate which is usually cheaper than what's on the street.

I had a metric crapton of points for HD Inn, we basically got a suite for a week in Charlotte VA for like $60 a couple summers ago when we went to Monticello

That's for sure. Often when I'm traveling for work I book my own then file my travel vouchers later. The Government rates are sometimes 10 to 15% higher than what you can find online.

As far as I know I have no access to a millitary base as i was only in for 3 years and those of us who only served short terms aren't elligible for the same bennifits as retirees. Those of you who served in a true career aspect and especially served in combat should be elligible for far more as you are the ones who truly deserve it.

I haven't had official travel in around 7 years. I guess once the hotel gets the idea you're traveling official they take the rate right up to the per diem limit or higher hoping you'll fill out and be approved for an exception letter. Our NTC is in Phoenix and they usually negotiate a contract rate for 20-30 rooms and it's a little lower plus they usually throw in drink and appetizer coupons (think trinkets to the Indians). But I hear our folks bitching about not finding below the per diem for other places. Once they shop they usually figure it out.

I did get questioned one time about a trip. We're supposed to book direct with the hotels. I thought the site I booked on was but it turned out to be a booking site. The travel folks didn't like that. Not sure why but they didn't. I actually had to write a statement about what happened.

Yep, that's what I see, the hotel rate is set to match what ever the per diem is. Then you go through the tax exempt status/forms. Sometimes you get by but most often I still end up paying the local hotel tax. Then have to submit the justification when I get home.
