Start with a Midland makes a good radio with presets.
Midland GTX1000 for handheld that is reasonably affordable and quality. I own a pair of these and like them.

Or the midland MXT115 for vehicle mounted. I don't own this one, but it's also decent.

Lots of info out there about getting into HAM for offroading though. Even a forum section here at TW.

New tires will be by far the best upgrade along maybe a 1in lift (if you need it for the tires). Otherwise like everyone else has said the locals in CO will know it all. I miss living in Golden so much

Yeah say that 2wds are pointless on the prerunner threads and there will be a lot of shit being thrown around.

I do love having 4wd tho, even if my MPG is actually worse than a new 1/2 ton truck

I personally think anyone that goes off the beaten path should have one, but they are expensive. Traction mats are a good idea. Come to think of it, I have only ever recovered other people with my winch, and only ever recovered myself with maxtrax. A winch is just an awesome tool to have. I have also used it to clear fallen trees.

Just watched a show where they took 40 plus year old STOCK vehicles over the Rubicon Trail, you know, how they used to do it just a generation or two ago ha.

They probably didn't get many likes, though

I saw that! Full sized gmc truck and an old all Jeep. The truck took a bit of damage and the Jeep was mostly okay. Keep in mind tha there are bypasses for most difficult obstacles.

If you want to see what a mostly stock old Willys Jeep can do, check out Stan Fuller on YouTube with Grandpa's Jeep. Here's a video link: https://youtu.be/5Cmxh7P6bkM

Good haha. The vast majority of those who travel the states and the world by vehicle for years and years on end don’t have any attention whatsoever. I’ve met hundreds of people out traveling the real way that doesn’t include sponsors or selling anything haha. And yes, I say the right and honest and good way. Don’t care what anyone says, hawking overpriced garbage to honest hard working people so you can get it for free is like the manly pyramid scheme. Might as well be selling essential oils with your wife haha.

These things are great because most people (if they’re even remotely honest with themselves) are going to be driving down a dirt road to some BLM land or up a rocky dirt road to a cool camp spot. Maybe get in some sandy or muddy trail. Very few are going to be hard core rock crawling every foot of their trip ha. So if this old stock Jeep can do all that then our modern Toyotas can very easy do much less, comfortably, safely, and happily :)

Can confirm. Live in Nevada. Trees happen elsewhere.
