I've been putting it off for months, but I'm selling my 2004 Taco. It's got the SR5 package, V6, Auto, aftermarket cruise, AC, 166k miles. Up to date on maintenance, newer battery, and really needs nothing. This truck has taken me from Nova Scotia, to Wyoming, Maine to Colorado, and has never let me down. I just bought a second gen and I need to pay for the mods I've got planned, so I’m selling. It literally hurts, but I have to be practical here.

As far as problems, the paint’s pretty faded (originally a TX truck), the passenger side head gasket weeps a little oil, and the frame has had to have some welding done on it. Where practical, the metal was cut and new welded in, where not practical, it was patched. (I know, it's not ideal, but pretty common for Ohio and the guy was a pro and did a solid job. I went over Engineer's pass after it was done, so I'm confident it's plenty strong. Is what it is, right?).

On the plus side, well maintained, oil changed every 5k, 150k mile service done last year. I had my mechanic check it over while he was doing all that (I was about to drive it to CO, so I didn't want any surprises) and he said everything looked good. That was a year ago though, but I think it's worth mentioning.

Three or four years ago, I installed a full OME suspension, with 881 springs, nitro shocks & Dakar leafs. I got a little better than 2" of lift. It currently has 265/75 Goodyear radials on it with (I'm guessing) 50% left.

I've taken this truck everywhere, it's (with no exaggeration) the best vehicle I've ever owned. I sort of impulsively bought my second gen though, and my finances would be a whole lot better if I sold this one. I'd like to see it go to someone who's going to keep it running like I have and use it the way it should be used.

It comes with the topper which came off a 90's Hilux originally, so the fit is ok, but sort of "good enough".

I was offered $6500 trade in, so I'm asking $7500 which I think seems fair. Like I said, I'd like to see it go to someone who can do something with it and not an auction block somewhere. I'm located near the Ohio/West Virginia border, about 90 minutes from Charleston, 90 minutes from Columbus, an hour from Huntington, 45 minutes from Parkersburg WV and 20 minutes from Athens, OH. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hello, I came across your Taco while looking for fair price to list mine and I know you sold it, but curious about your hood fade. It's a twin to mine of I put the cap on mine. I'm wondering how many of the 1st Gen Tacoma's had this issue. You're in Ohio I'm in Upstate NY. I wonder if it has anything to do with it. I had a new frame put on by Toyota 7 years ago and the gas tank was replaced last year. I just finished installing new bumpers front and back today. The old bumpers were rusted bad. Did you get close to $7k I only have 88k miles on mine.

Wound up taking a little under 7. It was sort of bittersweet, I had been asking $7500 locally and was hoping to take 7, but whatever... A nice older couple bought it to tow their bass boat to the lake. I like that it's still helping someone enjoy the outdoors, so I can live with the deal.

As far as the hood/roof fade, I've seen a bunch of Tacos do that. Mine spent the first part of its life in TX and I always assumed it just got baked down there. My rear bumper held up ok, but the front one was getting pretty rusty. I missed out on the a new frame thanks to the PO never getting it inspected/coated but did my best to mitigate the rust. I had so many great adventures in this old thing, tons of memories. A great truck and I'll miss it.

Thanks for getting back to me. I bought this Taco TRD Off Road for my dad. He had it 15ys and put 44k miles on it. I went through 4 of them in that time and put 130-150k on each. He can't drive any more as his sight is not good enough, so he gave it back to me. I bought it from a guy that inherited from his dad that passed away. it was 2 years old with 44k on it. Pretty Ironic. I have the list of additional parts replaced when they replaced the frame. The bill was $14k. Toyota would have been better to buy his truck from him. He put a new gas tank in it in last year. The bed looks new as it had Rhino lining in it. I've been driving it the past few weeks just to the gym and back. It's a nice truck and has more get up and go than my loaded 2018 TRD Sport. I think I'll list it for $7k. I was going to put it on Craigslist, but maybe I should list it on here also. It's clean other than the hood fade. He parked it in his driveway and not inside. I may tend to attract buyers that know what these trucks are about and worth. Thx again.

With a new frame and all those other parts, I'd put 8 on it at least. Maybe even 8500. I could have easily gotten more for mine if the frame had been replaced. A lot of people walked when they found out it was still the original (even though it really wasn't that bad by rust belt standards). Just show any potential buyer the 14K invoice!

The first gen's feel peppier than the newer trucks because they're geared lower. Really, the old ones are more "truck" in my opinion.

Thanks. I just read being a fairly new TW member, I can't list anything for sale yet. I don't have enough posts ( history). I agree with you on 1st gen. That is why I have the rear springs re-arched and add a leaf on my new ones. Without the added leaf it takes nothing in cargo to squat the rear end. Even my cap made it sit lower. They probably softened the suspension for the ride. I use, but don't abuse my truck as a truck. I have other property that I'm either loading things up to take up there or bring back, hence the cap. I tow my smaller trailers and boats with it also. I like the look of the truck better without the cap, but I need to protect stuff from elements and keep secure. I just sold my 2002 F350 7.3lt diesel that I used for my heavier trailers and plowing. I'm looking for a replacement, but based on issues Ford has had I would want a 2017 diesel and I don't want to beat up a new truck. I may try and live without it for a while.

do you think the weight difference and size factor also play a role in the peppier? for the 3.4 engine at least
i only have experience in a 2nd gen 4cyl so compared to my truck its sorta 'sluggish'

I've only had experience with the V6 trucks. The difference in weight is only about 300lbs. Not nothing for sure, but I have a feeling that going from 4.10 gears to 3.73's is a bigger factor. To really muddy this up though, I think the 4-bangers come with lower gears anyway.

Glad you tried hard to keep this truck off the auction block! Hopefully the 2nd gen will be just as great for you.
