I just signed up to this site hoping for insight and guidance on what to do for my truck. I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma that is completely stuck. I’m pretty sure it has a 2.7 liter 4 cylinder engine. I wish to lift my truck roughly 3-4 inches. But I feel after all the mods(bigger rubber, beefier suspension and so on) that my tiny 4 cylinder would not be able to handle these mods. If I was to lift my truck would I need an engine swap to a bigger engine or would my 4 cylinder be able to handle the added mods (also if I do not engine swap my truck and do instal the lift will the truck be very sluggish?)?

Depends on what size tires you want to run, you can regear it and it’ll help some.

do you think if I was to run 30 or 31 inch tires I would need to put in a whole new engine/transmission plus all of the other stuff that goes with it?

No, not with that small of a tire.

Just confirming what you said, I’d just need to regear my transmission to adjust for the bigger tires. And does it make a difference that my truck is manual. And many thanks to everyone for being very helpful

Okay cool, this was a big concern with me and holding me back from modifying my truck. Now knowing this information I’m going to try and begin to do the things I wish for my truck. Thank you all for the insight.

If you want to run a 31 10.5 15 tire or a 265 75 16 tire and you have the 2.7 3rz your differentials should be 4.10 or 4.30 gears. If you look on your door jam sticker (driver side) you will see the gear code. If you have 3.58s your code will be b02a and your truck would have come with 235 75 15 tires. If you have 4.10s b03a and 4.30s b04a. I have 2.4 2rz 4 cylinder and am running 265 75 16s with 4.56 gears. I have no issues getting up to speed. I plan on going up to a 285 75 16 this summer. You don't need to do an engine swap. There is plenty you can do to push the bigger tires.

For doing any type of lift I’d need to extend my brake lines and such correct?

I run 32's on a 2.7 auto double cab. Its fine. I think people act like they are slower than they really are. Only time it sucks is when I'm going up big hills which is rare where I live.

Yeah one time I took my truck a bit up north to go skiing and heading up the steep roads on the mountain it was bogging down a bit. But once I dropped it down a gear it was running fine

Yeah. Regearing in my opinion if your on less than 33's is a waste of money. My bigger tires actually helped me because it dropped my RPM's a little on the freeway. I get 17ish or more city and 20-22 highway still.

Could any of you guys give me a rough estimate of how much it will cost me for a lift and tires?

Depends on what lift and tires. I did my lift for 1.2k. Tires were another 850. Wheels were 500.

I'm not trying to talk you out of a lift, but do you really need it for 30" or 31" tires. Some tacomas came stock with 31" tires.
