Old Man Emu setups on 1st gens

Good looking set up! Im looking to do the same to my 2004. Did you have to do additional? Break line extension? Diff drop?

 

I just did 2.75” on mine, have the brake line extension but didn’t have time to install it. It’s fine but if you’re gonna go on some trails you should put it on.


Did the diff drop, marginal improvement IMO but anything helps.

Brake proportioning relocation thingy is a must.

For the tail pipe, a lot of people chop and/or reroute their tailpipe after the muffler, I used the included bracket with the wheelers OME kit to extend/lower it. Will likely have an exhaust shop reroute it so it’s tucked under the body of the car again, because it certainly is something to hit now when I go off-road. You can see in my pic above that the tailpipe now sits about 4-5” away from the body.

I’d wager with the truck you quoted you probably don’t need the diff drop or extended brake line (unless you’re planning on flexing a ton)

 

Anchoricex is right on the money.

I had a diff drop with the kit but ended up not installing it. The angle change would have been minor and with front locking hubs, I don't have my front CVs spinning constantly so decided to forgo that item.

Brake proportioning relocation bracket was indeed a must install, an obvious need when looking at the height changes.

No brake line extensions needed when at rest or flex with the 2" lift.

Ended up utilizing the existing exhaust hanger bracket, just dropped it down one mounting hole. This does mean it is currently only supported by one bolt instead of the factory two pattern, but I haven't had any issues with it yet and have definitely put it through it's paces.

 

Just did a full OME kit with the 882s and the add a leaf. Choose to go with the JBA UCAs.

My parking brake cable is contacting the new leafs on the passenger side

 

Looks great man! E-brake cable bracket mod will lift the cables off your leafs. You should see mine, yuck (Dakar with AAL). I've been meaning to make these brackets for too long, thanks for the reminder.

Just my two cents but as mentioned before, for the love of whomever, the 882s are stiff enough and will stand nice and tall with a winch and bumper...

-882s and Nitrochargers up front
-Dakar + AAL with Nitrochargers in the rear
-SPC UCAs
-ARB bumper
-M8000 winch
-Sliders
-4x Innovation front skid (heavy metal)
-50 amp-hour AGM battery under hood passenger side
-Wildernest Camper (heavy son of a that's not really manageable with less than 3 people, preferably 4 so however heavy that is, and I'm way stronger than you, so...)
-Bed length wood cabinets (not too heavy, but still weigh something)
-Tools and jacks and crap
-BFG AT/KO2 265/75R16 (now 285/75R16 Duratracs just RUBBING THE SHIZ out of my frame)
-My girlfriend

Thanks for the heads up on the parking brake cable bracket mod.

I chose the 882 because I will be installing a plate bumper and winch shortly. I normally have a canopy on the truck, just took it off for the install and to repair the broken rear glass door. I carry about 250# of tools and supplies on an average day so I figured the add a leaf would be beneficial.

With the truck being empty at the moment with the 882s, add a leaf and E load rated tires it is not really that bumpy compared to my shot factory suspension haha.

Seeing your Lunar Mist double cab with camper makes me regret selling my camper.

 

Planning on running a similar setup in the future. Have you done any mods to try reduce the rubbing of the 285s? Wheel spacers, pinch weld, etc..?

 

@TacomaEli I spoke with Dustin at FN Wheels (rave reviews) and am putting a set of 16x8 Konig Countersteer Offroads, 0mm offset, 4.5 backspacing. That will take care of the frame rubbing, and with the ARB up front there's no worries of rubbing there, and I'll need to do the pinch weld mod. You could do a spacer as well. Stock 2001 Tacoma rims have 15mm offset on a 7" rim comes out to something like 4.59" backspacing so 1" spacer would achieve the same thing, sort of, if you kept the rims stock.

 

Hi y’all! Just got a Tacoma, first post. About to install a full OME kit. Wish I would’ve had wheelers assemble the struts, took em to a local shop not to happy with how it looks. Can’t tell if it’s just a poor quality strut mount/isolator and fitment or a poor job. Thoughts? I admit that I got too anxious and got the strut mounts from autozone, instead of waiting a day for the Monroe’s that reportedly work well. Oh stupid me. I’ve never seen the isolators look like this and watching the “mechanic” struggling to work the spring compressor doesn’t give me much confidence this was done right. Any advice is appreciated!

 

do you feel that the dakar+AAL is adequate to hold the wildernest? i just picked up a Flippac and i'm trying to figure out my options, im still on stock leaf pack + AAL and 5100s all around

 

I’m confused, everyone seems to say something different about which OME coils. I want to run an ARB Bumper and a winch in the future. 883s?

 

Your best bet would be to contact someone like the folks at Wheeler's. They helped me immensely in my research. FYI: my setup is a 4 door prerunner V6 with stock front bumper and a go rhino grille guard, outfitted with 881s. I wanted to level the truck to match the Dakar leaf packs with no changes to the way they were stacked. All total, lifted/leveled about 1.5-2 inches.

 

i have 2.5 inch coil spacers on the front of my 01 regular cab and the leafs are shot. I already know what rear shocks I’m using but I’m stumped on leafs. Does ome sale a leaf that’s stock.

 

I have a 1998 Limited TRD Off Road and i noticed my rear end sits higher than the other stock trucks on here. Did the TRD Off Road come with different rear leafs and if so how much lift will I actually see from the Dakar leafs?

 

The 881 and 882 have the same spring rate, but the 882 is 20mm taller. I have the 882s with an ARB and winch up front, I started with 881s but wanted a little higher ride height in the front. The 883 is the same height as the 881, but with a higher spring rate. I wish I knew someone with 883s and an ARB/winch up front so that I could park next to them and go for a drive to see what the ride is like. This was on TTORA somewhere I just couldn't find the post on TacoMundo

I just placed an order at Wheeler's Off-Road for a complete OME 2" with 881s and an AAL for my 02 Xtra Cab. I am so excited!!!

Does anyone have any install tips or advice? I plan on installing them myself at an auto hobby shop.
