I've read many good threads about squeal noises...hoping someone can pinpoint a possible solution.

My truck: 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport...53,000 miles
My Issue: very annoying squeal noise

Very audible from inside of cab when driving. seems to occur regularly once truck has been driving for 15 or so minutes..ie: when it warms up. I live in Vancouver Canada...climate is mild. Noise happens on warm days (65 degrees - 80 degrees) and cold days (40 degrees). Noise has been happening for near 7 months. Noise appears at speeds over 30 - 40 mph and continues as the speedo climbs. Noise goes away when slowing down below 20 mph.

Whether braking, coasting, accelerating, under load (towing) or nothing at all...the noise is consistent. It sounds like a very very high pitch squeal.

I took it into the dealership, (they too heard the noise), 1st time they took apart the drive shaft...said it was coming from the u-joint. Of course they didn't have a new part to fix...so I had to take it back a 2nd time...they replaced the u-joint (confirmed it was needing replacement and that the problem was fixed) That same day, the noise came back...within 15 minutes of driving away from the dealership.

They are saying bring it back and they'll do more diagnostics.

My concern is that I've already paid $650 for their diagnostic work and u-joint replacement...how much more might this cost for them to poke around guessing?

Has anyone had similar issues and found a solution?

Oh, and I've greased the 3 nipples on the drive shaft...no change in sound.

I've heard of carrier bearings, wheel bearings, axle bearings, plugging holes in left control arms, alternator bearings, belts, water pump, shim for the drive shaft, etc. I wish I was a mechanic, I'm not. Fixing all these would cost a mint...can anyone help with a specific fix?

When I bought mine as I was driving from AZ to CA I noticed high pitch squeal when driving above 60mph, and then put a piece of duct tape over the top of the windshield, noise went away until tape came off, does this squeal sound like its coming specifically from under the truck?

I'd say either under the truck or from lower right side. When you lower right passenger window, if you can hear past my tire road noise, you can tell the sound is somewhere under or lower right side.

Passing parked cars, a close wall, etc. The sound will bounce back to be even more audible.

The noise starts as low as 30-40 mph. When slowing down, the noise continues until as slow as 20 mph.

    Thanks for the idea muddinfun.

Just called that shop to inquire on the tool cost. $320; however they said Amazon is a partner and will sell the same for about 1/2 the cost.

I'll check some local garages to see if they have that tool.

    @jtnce

did you ever figure this out....?
    Or anyone else
I have been reading on here for months and my 2012 with 96k has been doing the exact same thing but since you have to be moving I can’t poke around to nail down where it’s coming from..

Sorry to hear about your troubles.....hoping to help.

Has anyone explored the idler pulleys and or tensioner pulley on the drive belt? Wondering if when the truck warms up the pulleys expand and so more play is created and the pulleys start to squeal.
    Keep us posted...hope this helps

    Just a follow up
Mine ended up being the carrier bearing. I replaced that and all is good....for the longest I though it was a belt or pulley but surprised that it ended up coming from under the vehicle
