First oil change

That's not for an Oil Change.

 

I have stuck with the factory recommended interval of 16,000kms or 1 year. Since I didn't make the kms I did the year.

The magnet in the diff it technically a filter and even called a filter in some manuals.

 

The maintenance manual mentions every 5K if you drive in temps under 32f and less than 5mi.distances on reg.basis. Otherwise 10k

 

Ha ha, good analogy.

 

I got my first one done at 4100 miles under Toyotacare, but only because I only drive about 4500 miles a year, and was hitting the 1 year mark.

10k or 12 months is what's in the service schedule.

 

10,000 just like Toyota recommended. No issues, it even looked clean at 10,000 on the dipstick.

 

I’m probably going to wait till 8-10k miles (depending on time). The engines get broken in at the factory so I don’t get onboard with the whole shavings thing. In my experience one of the biggest draws to even buying a Toyota is reliability, engine reliability in particular. They take a lot of pride in those statistics showing the percentage of vehicles on the road over a certain number of miles.

 

What's the chance you can get the "they" to start taking pride in the frames?

 

“They” don’t have to, “They” sell a lot of them.
“Their” customers keep buying them.
Why change a good thing?

I mean after all, I’m on my 4th Tacoma.

After 10+ years, you would think something would change?

 

I did it at 1000 miles. My service advisor told me quite a few people get the first oil change at 1K.
$39.95 special at my dealership. Got a free carwash too.

Actually, I tend to look at it this way >> 'I still wash my butt every day' even though the TP manufacturer says 'my hineys clean'.

You better trade that thing in while its still running.

 

I've never seen an engine blow unless it was the fill plug left out or the first 200 miles.
I'm pretty sure Jiffy Lube started that 3k bullshit.

 

3-5k with conventional oil might be more realistic as that crap turns to sludge a lot easier.

 

The great oil debate of 1950 still rages on to this day... when, where, with what, and how.

The question you need to be asking yourself is "What interval do YOU feel comfortable with?" You most likely read the owners manual and got that information and read the Toyota care agreement and got that info and were not happy with those answers. You are most likely not going to agree with most of the answers you get on here either.

I did my first one at 4664 miles, it had nothing to do with what Toyota recommended, what my buddy thought, what the oil stated... it just came down to the fact I am old, set in my ways, and used to changing oil between 3K-5K miles.

I do keep my toilet paper till the last sheet though, so apparently I am more progressive then others

 

Agree, that's really all that matters.

If someone wants to waste their money on oil changes every 3k miles, even though they will be trading their truck in for something new in 5 years anyway, they are free to do so. Realistically though, these engines are built to last, with or without frequent oil changes, and whether using cheap or expensive oil. By the time 99.9% of us have worn out our Tacoma engines, our entire trucks will likely be worn out too and we will be wanting something new anyway.

TL;DR: Change the oil as often as you'd like

I'm driving it a lot less, so now it's every 12 months.(approx. 7,500).

 

I've always changed the oil on new engines at 1K mi, just to make sure the brand new engine is put together right. Then 5K, give or take, from then on. I can afford it. Like most Toyotas, take care of it and it will take care of you.

 

Surprisingly, this is the first vehicle I've owned where I waited until the actual first recommended 10k interval. I usually do it at 5k

 

TP made a good engine oil filter back in the day. Still sell them today, Frantz filters, even available through Amazon.
