My colleague at work has a 17 OR taco and a while ago was sandwiched between 2 cars and has some damage to the front the rear bumpers, no body damage. The hitter's insurance does not want to pay for OEM replacements. He is looking to replace the bumpers with aluminum ones. I have no knowledge about after market bumpers and trying to help him. Please post and link all info and I will forward it to him. Thanks.
P.S. He likes to hunt and mild off road to the hunting spots.

@BAMF is highly regarded in terms of quality and ruggedness and they have a aluminum/steel one. I will be going for the hybrid bumper soon: https://bayareametalfab.3dcartstores.com/Bumpers_c_23.html

Steel is far more common, but I'll link the common ones I see get posted here/youtube enough that I know of them for anyone finding this thread in the future and to maybe inform your buddy's decicion:

Never heard of this aluminum one:

I dont think they really have a choice here... They are responsible for the damage and dont get to dictate what replacements to get. But, since I dont know enough I would consult your local law, and possibly his own insurance adjuster.

But, as for you question, the list above is a good one. But also keep in mind that aluminum bumpers will be way way more expensive than even OEM new parts will be.

For not-at-fault damage, I've heard you can get a straight payout for the estimated damages- not sure how that works though. For at-fault damage, my understanding is that is not possible. So I presume, the rear bumper can get paid out on the estimate "cash" and the front damage will be out of pocket

That doesn't make sense. If the other driver admits fault then their ass is paying for a full replacement at the price quoted by a shop or else they're getting sued. Something smells funny.

doesn't really make much sense considering oem will be far cheaper than an aluminum off road bumper

What I'm saying is: A) If damage is caused to your vehicle by another insured driver, and they are found at-fault (i.e. an at-fault collision claim on the other driver's insurance for your vehicle), I have heard that you have a say in how you want to be made whole; either payment of damages caused or payment of repairs needed. And B) that when you cause damage to another vehicle (i.e. an at-fault collision claim on your own vehicle), you do not get a say in how your insurance pays you out for the repair.

Virtually ALL rear ending incidents in the US are default at-fault for the driver who rear ends the driver in front of them even in cases of multiple vehicles because "you should have left more room in front of you". If you're lucky, insurance will declare the party that hit you into the car in front of you at fault for both, but it is very dependant on the circumstances and how the various insurance companies work together.

I am not an insurance agent, nor a lawyer, nor have I ever played one on TacomaWorld. Just adding my thoughts from experience, from discussions with insurance, from discussions with body shops, etc.

I wasn’t referring to you. I was talking about the OP. If someone is at-fault, the insurance doesn’t get to choose whether your quote is restricted to non OEM parts. You have a right to a viable replacement, which for collisions means you are entitled to get the truck repaired with the original parts that were damaged. That can also mean you’re entitled to a payout of the equivalent price, but having an insurance company tell you they won’t reimburse you for the price of or repair your truck with OEM parts is straight bullshit.
