I was planning to do my PS flush and looked the type up in all data, then double checked the manual, both ATF III. When I looked in the reservoir and pulled a sample it is definitely not an ATF as it is clearly amber. Do I go with the ATF called out on the manual and on all data? Or do I go with what is clearly regular PS fluid. Any advice or knowledge of where I could get more clarity?

I bet it smells like atf, it just isn’t red. At least that’s how my 2014 is.

It does not smell like ATF. I also doubt somebody changed it. I am the original owner and Toyota did my device for the first 20k but I took over after that. Even if my fluid was low (I have no leaks) if someone added any it would have had to been so minimal that the effects would be negligible on the red color.

My original PS fluid was amber. The truck label says use auto trans fluid. I used MaxLife because it relatively cheep. My guess you can get “amber“ Toyota PS fluid from the dealer, for a price.

    It's just undyed fluid.

The manual is correct, its Dextron III. You can use synthetic Dex III replacement if you'd like as well.

Do some searching there's lots of this question on here.

My manual says ATF Dexron II or III but no where on the Toyota atf jug does it state Dexron ii or iii. Is this ok to use to top off my power steering reservoir?

I have never once seen my PS fluid move from the Cold Min line. And I've looked many times.
