If I had to tow over 5k lbs on a regular basis up and down grades, id buy a larger truck. Honestly id buy a diesel f250 and call it a day. Over trucking your load makes the drive much more pleasant.

That being said, I have a racecar im building. And a bunch of my friends and family have race/toy cars. Ive towed a handful of 3k+ cars on various trailers all over Oklahoma and Texas without issue. Only time I really thought "I need a bigger truck" was when I was towing my 1994 Camaro Z28 on a 22" flat trailer with an airfoil up front (im sure it has an actual name but I dont know it). The wind drag was god awful. 99% of the area I travel is flat, if it had any real grade to it id be in a larger truck.

I've got a couple different trailers that I towed with a RAM 1500. For the most part, it was pretty much drama free and the lightest trailer (14 foot enclosed) was pretty much unnoticeable accept for the wind drag and slightly worse breaking. With the Tacoma that trailer is very noticeable. I wouldn't mind pulling it around at 5,000 lbs. for very short distances and lower speeds. Anything involving freeways, hills... with more than a couple of dirt bikes in it would make me clinch. I have an older Chevy 2500 HD that I now use exclusively for towing. If I only had one pickup and needed to tow beyond 4,000 lbs with regularity, I'd buy a 3/4 ton and live with all the drawbacks of a big truck as a daily driver.

Zombie thread or not, realistic maximum towing capacity for a 3rd gen V6 4x4 double cab is 5760 pounds based on the truck’s 11360# GCVW and 5600# GVWR. Leaving a 25% capacity cushion would give you a max trailer of 4320#.

I'd personally consider the 2.8L Duramax Chevy Colorado if I wanted a small truck that can tow 5000+lbs often.
That said, I have no issues maxing out the towing on a Taco.

    Edit: Old thread apparently. Nevermind
