At least enough that I don’t avoid different roads because of the salt. But also so I can throw my bike on the rack and not be worried about it rusting through on the 10 minute trip home.

Hello friends! I seek your advice/wisdom/guidance. I'm sure some of you remember me and my truck. I for sure remember a lot of you weirdos (miss you guys). I'm at a pivotal moment with the old girl. She's a 09 trd OR with over 150k+ miles on her, and I have neglected her over the last few years as a work truck. I need to decide if I should put a few grand into her to keep her on the road or look into other options, here's my situation:

I'm a self employed carpenter and the Tacoma is my work truck, I feel like I have outgrown her and it's a struggle to carry everything I need day to day to be efficient. Somehow I make it work, with some organization and a few cheap upgrades she can probably keep up to my demands for another year or two. So I decided it's time to weigh my options, my clutch is shot (on my 2nd), my exhaust is shot, my suspension is shot, I need new tires, like I said, I've neglected her for sure. I went to my local dealership, where I bought the truck, for a oil change. I was hoping to talk to someone knowledgeable to help with my pending decision. To my surprise the service manger wants to replace my frame. I never mentioned the rust recall, I haven't visited the dealership in years, I do all my own maintenance. I knew about the frame recall but I assumed I was exempted because of the CMC and bolt on sliders. I was hesitant to mention the DYI mods, he brought it up first, obviously the guy in the shop noticed them but that wasn't the area of the frame they were concerned about. The service manager told me that the tech said he could easily put a hole in the frame with a hammer in areas of the frame that couldn't be affected by the mods and were known problem areas. It's looking like I can get a new frame, piece together old parts and craigslist finds and pretty much go back to stock for 3-4k and keep her on the road on awhile. The other option is upgrade. Here is were I am mainly seeking advise, Toyota should be willing to offer me an incentive to buy new rather than spend their money to replace the frame on a 10 year old truck. A friend of a friend supposedly got a great deal in a similar situation. Should I reach out to corporate and see if I can get a deal and probably scrap the truck, or is that a shady move and I should just get a new frame and keep her on the road? I also need to consider the fact that I'm pretty broke and monthly payment for a tundra, even used is pretty expensive.

TLDR: Should I go through with a frame swap, 150k on the truck and thinking about trading it in?

I have Porky's on DVD somewhere underrated in my opinion.

Yeah alot of great movies have been brought up so far. Stripes is so good. The days of Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, John Candy, John Belushi, Rodney Dangerfield, Dan Aykroyd etc. (too many to list) in their heyday was the golden age of great comedians.

For me this one is tough. Do you feel like you would still use the taco a good amount if you get it fixed up? For work it sounds like you are out growing it. Not sure it is worth it for you to keep it if you get it fixed and have it be neglected again.

Evan, welcome back! I’d do the frame swap and then reevaluate. I think you’ll make out better selling a truck with a good frame versus trading one in without. If possible, have as much replaced while it’s apart.

Welcome back! My $0.02, money aside, it sounds like you could use a bigger truck. If I were a self employed carpenter, I'd be looking at a used 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Considering your stated financial situation, your cheapest option is to run what you already own. The aftermarket support and parts availability for the Tacoma is incredible and something I really miss since going away from one. You can find used wheel/tire take off sets in the $500 range, used suspension components cheap from someone who upgraded and has their old 2nd gen stuff just collecting dust somewhere. Now, you can get the frame replaced for free and likely get the suspension stuff swapped for close to nothing in the process.

If you do trade it, if a Tundra is not within your means, I don't feel like you gain much by going with a new Tacoma, just a new version of the truck that's struggling to meet your needs now. From a practicality / functionality perspective, I'd trade it for a 3/4 or 1 ton truck after the frame swap. From a cost perspective, I'd scavenge for parts, fix and keep it.

    Morning all!
One thing to bear in mind is that a frame swap isn't something they can do in a day; I've heard about some people being out of their trucks for nearly 3 months, while they're in a rental/loaner. If you're using it for work, that could be a problem for you. For that reason alone, it may be worth negotiating a deal with Toyota corporate to see what you could get into. :notsure:

Stocks set for 1100 dive right off the bat. Yee Haw!

PS Frame- I'd say drop the new frame in and then check on resale. Nobody wants a clapped out rusted frame, it'll go for a lower price and then they have to go through the hassle of a new frame. Do a new frame, it'll resale a lot higher, or you end up wanting to keep it :D

Or do look, teach yourself shocks happen and don't panic sell. But yeah we're in for a wild ride. Hold on tight! Happy to see a lot of companies are already talking about leniency - mortgages, credit cards, etc. before layoff waves even start.
