My sister has an X5 that she asked me to drop off at the dealership for service. I noticed a nasty vibration when I turned it on. It got worse as put it in gear and drove. I mentioned it to the service rep and later he called me saying it was the motor mount. Apparently its damaged and causing the vibration. He said that since it has 45K miles its out of warranty. Excuse me but wtf!?!? Are you telling me BMW is selling disposable after 25K miles vehicles? Do you expect me to just toss it out or something? No one wants a used BMW, much less a faulty one. Do I have to throw it out and get a new one every 3 years? If dodge can offer a lifetime warranty on their drivetrains cant BMW do so as well on their "ultimate driving machine." This type of failure doesn't even happen on the most basic cars, much less should it occur on a self proclaimed "ultimate driving machine." They wont fix their faulty vehicles yet they have the audacity to keep sending trade in offers. Pathetic. Listen to me and countless others, stay away from German cars. This truck has had a bunch of things replaced under the original warranty and I have a feeling that its going to keep needing more.

I get your drift. It seems like the most ecological approach is to build, solid good vehicles that you can fix for a long period. Problem with that is there's less profit.

I view all of the German Panzerwagens as great vehicles to lease, not so great to buy.

It's not that they are necessarily bad vehicles (though some are) but when stuff does break it costs a fortune to repair/replace.

One of my coworkers had an X5.

Just after warranty it hit him up for $3k+ in repairs ($1400 water cooled alternator!) so he traded it.......for a Jaguar o_O

I asked him if he was wanting to become an auto mechanic or if he just wanted to get lots of practice at it.

When you trade a BMW for a Jag you know you have status/image issues.

    Not really.

More of a "Yes Dear" issue.

The X5 was his wife's driver. She thought the Jag was "cute".

    Those came soon after.

    He didn't keep it long.

    Now she drives a Lexus.

    Hopefully it will be solid.

I don't understand the problem, I work at a Ford dealer and bumper to bumper is over at 3 years/36000 miles. If you buy extended warranty it covers 90% of stuff. Powertrain engine/trans/axles goes to 60000 miles I believe.
Thus at 45000 miles you would be out of bumper to bumper warranty and motor mounts would no longer be covered unless you purchased a extended warranty plan.

Now if the engine broke at 45000 miles and they said tough luck that would be utter bullshit.

Based on what you said I would think just replace the engine mount and that fixes the problem, no need to throw out the vehicle. It's a BMW so it's expensive parts and maybe lots of labor due to the design but that's just part of owning a BMW.

Yes, but why is it so expensive? Because of the shitty components, that should outlast the engine, they use that give out at 45K? Thats a reason to make it cheaper if you ask me. Maybe they're expensive because they're just riding on old glory or something.

The first year at most. Then the motor mount breaks and vibrates more '99 f250 out of alignment.

A whole car thrown in the land fill is probably still worse that that.
