How To: Check fuel pressure w/pics

First you need to pop the hood and go to the drivers side of the engine bay.


Next you need the take the lid off the fuse/relay box.


Then you need to remove the red relay. Turn the engine over a few times and doing this relives the fuel pressure in the line so it doesn't spray much fuel when removed.


After, you can now put the relay back in the same slot it was removed from.

Next, remove the blk plastic cover that is on the connector. Make sure you have a rag under the connector to catch the fuel while you disconnect it via the yellow buttons on the sides of the connector.



Next, you can easily hookup you gauge to the metal tube, I have and used the kit from harbor freight that I don't have any complaints about, I've had it for a couple years now.


Now just turn the engine over till the needle stops going up and viola you now have your fuel pressure.

After just put everything back and you are done.

I believe ur supposed to put a tee inline to the gauge...otherwise ur just deadheading the pump and get an inconsistent reading. Good writeup thou. Useful info!!

 

This is the wrong way to do it. It is dead heading the pump into the gauge and you are getting a reading without the regulator in the fuel circuit. The regulator is at the end of the fuel rail. The reading you get will be abnormally high.

The correct way:

 

If 2tr’s don’t have fuel pressure sensors what is the scan tool gonna do to help us figure out if we have a fuel pressure issue?

 

It's just showing using the scan tool to turn the pump on to check engine off fuel pressure, I hardly ever use that test anyway unless diagnosing a no start.
It's preferable to check fuel pressure with the engine running and even better under a load to see if the pump can keep up with demand.

This kit or something similar is what's needed to check fuel pressure on 2nd gens.

For real? Ok cause I rented a kit from Oreillys and the little yellow button fuel line connector on my truck didn’t seem to fit their “T” fitting very well so I didn’t get a chance to check the fuel pressure. Yea looks like the tee fitting in that kit is meant to tee into a rubber hose not a quick connect fitting.

 

Ya. Talked to URD and the guy was just like… uh idk what to tell you but that’s what you do blah blah. So not the most helpful regarding testing fuel pressure but it’s fine we’ll figure it out.
