I have this clunk now.. I happens at low speeds turning left or right, going forward and backwards... I was thinking the rack or sway bar links. I noticed I could move my tires a bit and could see the intermediate shaft turn.. Should there be play like that?

I hope this helps other people.
But i had this exact noise and problem. Came from the same area to. So i took it to my dealer.
They diagnosed it as being the intermediate shaft that connects to the steering rack. I got lucky and they replaced it for me under my 100k mile warranty. Even though its not sappose to be covered under the powertrain warranty.
Hope that helps others with this annoying clunk

I had the clunking sound when turning left and going over bumps. Thought it was struts at first but had more of a metal to metal sound. Took it to the garage and found Power steering link and the stabilizer bar link bolts were very loose. They retorqued the bolts and seems to fix the issue. It appears they were not to specs from the factory.

my clunk came back and is worse.. I hate this, sounds like me nice Tacoma is falling apart. :(
Anyone ever figure it out? or get it fixed. I'm going to go look at things right now and see if I can figure out where its coming from.

I don't have the "clunk" noise, I have a slight grinding noise when turning left, forward and backward and the steering wheel is almost maxed out during the turn at slow speeds. No one seems to know where the noise is coming from. Any Answers?

Mine was making this clunking sounds while turning at slow speeds, especially if going over any slight bump. Checked EVERYTHING and everything was torqued to spec. I removed the sway bar and gone! No more popping sound! Not sure why...

Do you have aftermarket coilovers? Sway bar can hit bigger coils and make a noise, hence why people get a swaybar relocation kit

I have OME 885 coils. I looked to see if it was hitting/rubbing anything but I didn't see any marks anywhere. I will have to check again a little closer....thanks...

I have OME 886s and my sway bar was hitting. Also during my install i damaged my links and lost a bunch of the grease. Ended up having to get new ones. They were making a popping/clunking sound on bump and slow turns in reverse

I had the same exact clunking/popping noise while making tight turns to the right while driving slow. I decided to replace the inner and outer tie rods, as well as the sway bar bushings and the sound is gone! My truck (2nd gen) has 150k miles. The sway bar bushings were all dried up and warped. Both sets of inner and outer tie rods were completely shot. The right outer tie rod was the worst (where the popping noise came from). It was so bad the tie rod just flopped around with no resistance what so ever. I would definitely recommend replacing both sets of inner/outer tie rod ends as well as the sway bar bushings. Super easy job and parts are relatively cheap on Amazon. Just beware of reviews that talk about a certain outer tie rod company that advertises grease-able ties, only to ship the exact opposite of what you ordered...happened to me and many others. I wasn't sharp enough to pay more attention to the bad reviews.

Do you mean Moog? What brand or set of those should we stay away from?

I’m looking at changing out the sway bar bushings due to a cluck sound and bit of a loose rattle going on in the steering. And at 131k miles it’s due. What’s everybody using? I’ve heard good things about Energy Suspension, Moog and Napa Chassis Parts. I’d like to have red ones to match my truck and JBA UCA’s. A guy on a YouTube video used these 30mm Prothane bushings that are red, greaseable and have brackets included for $25 a set on Amazon. They also have 5 star rating.

I stated a "certain outer tie rod company" for a reason. The intent was to get people (like myself) to pay more attention to product reviews before hitting that order button. But take a Look at the bad reviews for Proforged Tie Rods. Like others who bought their products, I was definatly not happy when I did not get what I paid for. Even more unhappy to know they won't bother return calls for replacement.

I bought/installed these bushings for my 2006 Tacoma. So far they work great:

Thanks for clarifying. I’ll steer clear! I was probably going with Moog or the Napa Chassis Parts for rod ends. Those ES bushings have great reviews. Did yours come with the clamp and grease zerks?

Eyoooo guess what! It's happening to me too. I have a 2017 with aftermarket coils. Stationary and very slow speeds it makes the sound towards the end of the turns. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all at certain angles when stationary. Looks like the inner tie rods and sway bar bushings resolved this for one person. Anyone else have luck with this?
