My 2004 just started making a noise in the rear. I found my rear passenger side shock mount ripped out of the frame.

My frame wasnt under the recall according to toyota when i checked a couple years back....

Not sure what to do now. Truck doesnt even have 200k on it. Got new tires about a year go

Is it garbage? I have to continue to drive it like this due to it being my only car.

I cant beleive they can get away with this. I have never hauled anything heavy and never towed anything. IT has been a pretty light use truck over the years.

I wonder if i welding/fabrication shop could weld a new sleeve/mount there or something.

Did you do a search for Frame Rust?
    Or Rear Shock Rust?

You'll get quicker answers as there are hundreds of posts out there.

This following company said they can fix any rust problems. (Their located in R.I.)
Or you can have your local shop do the work)
I ordered the rear kit, and had both sides done at my local shop in 2019. Labor was $500 a side.
The shop also sprayed the inside & outside frame after repair.

The frame replacement program is over for 1st gens now so it wouldn't matter if you qualified or not, but it would be nice to see pics of how bad we're talking.
Though if the shock mounts are breaking off I can imagine it's pretty bad

    What inspectors?

No one has an obligation to your truck other than you, the owner, and only if you choose to.

Its unfortunate for those that are unaware of Tacoma's lack of frame coating, but unless you've money to throw away, no reason to be neglecting a vehicle you own.

    Where are you located?

Maybe someone can recommend a shop to check it out for you.

Autorust.com sells frame reinforcement plates for the common trouble areas on 1st Gen Tacomas, if you or someone you trust can weld them on for you it might buy your truck some more time.

    Fuuuuuu

Quit driving it; I bet there are a lot of other places you can hit with a hammer and it'll break just the same way.

You can't assume everyone takes their vehicle to a dealership; you know what they say about assuming.

With that being said, let's depart from this thread.

OP needs assistance so let's allow everyone else provide it. Complaining about "policies and procedures, and corporate" doesn't add anything to this thread.

On the bright side, less weight = better gas mileage.

Check into the autorust stuff, their safe-t-cap system may save it.

I never saw that he had ever had it inspected. Most states wouldn't. Only the ones that salt the roads. Toyota never has actually said they did anything wrong. He wasn't on the recall because there never was one.

yeah....id say it should have. I argued it up and down back in 2018. They didnt care. IT was under the warranty but the previous owner brought it in and had it sprayed by toyota which took care of the warranty/recall. Thats what they called the fix. Fast forward a few years and now i own the truck.

I have gone around my entire frame (as best i could) and this is the only spot thats bad. Not sure how to get to work ...or anywhere for that matter.

Hmm....do you suppose the frame can be patched there?

I was pretty diligent about hitting the frame every fall before winter with a rush inhibitor. I guess i didnt think this issue in the rear was a big deal or common spot as there are no heavy loads here. oh well....guess i was wrong. Surprising to see as i thought had looked over everything quite well as i was afraid of frame rot.

    what now?

Eat a shot gun? Cant sell it like this i dont imagine. Sad..not even 200k yet and runs like a top.

Mine looked the same on the frame rail. I fixed it by cutting the frame rust out and welding some frame reinforcement plates over it from trail gear. I can probibly guarentee its rotted out down by the fuel tank on the inner frame rail as well. I would pull the bed off and make a scab plate and weld the shock mount back to the frame and put a plate over it. I'm thinking of building a whole new rear frame from the rear of my cab back this upcoming fall.

Heres what your frame rail probibly looks like by the fuel tank:

What kind of rust inhibitor? And the inside too?

This is one of the downfalls of boxed frames IMO. I bet we will see this on other trucks now that it's such a popular design option.

Definitely look into getting it repaired properly. Do a lot of the labor yourself, pull the bed and that other crap so a competent fabber can see what should be done, not just have a fabber slap a cap on it and send you on your way.
It's gonna depend on how much time and work you want to put into it, or how much you want to pay someone else to put their time and work into it.
If the taco is a gem and truly nice and clean, I'd pull the bed and start planning my fixes. Lots of documented help and fixes and repairs and experience here. You can also see what fixing it the right way entails in those experiences folks have documented here. Some repair and plan on just enough repair to the frame to hopefully get them 5 years. For me personally, to just get 5 more years out of it, that's not worth the hassle of repairing it
