All-Pro Off Road Transfer Case/Exhaust Skid plate review

    Toyota has been building very capable off-road vehicles for decades, so far be it for me to second guess them, but man, the place where the exhaust on my 2016 crosses under the frame just looks like it’s asking for trouble. Sure, it has a little give to it, and yes, even if you were to rip it off on a rock it isn’t the thing that’s most likely to strand you. Still…. Plus, the transfer case is right up near there, too, and that’s one that’ll cost you a bundle to eff up.


    Luckily, at last count there are approximately 712,001 companies out there making skid plates to address this issue. I decided to go with the All-Pro Off Road Transfer Case / Exhaust Skid. All-Pro has a good reputation and in researching various company’s approaches to this issue I really liked the concept behind the All-Pro plate. It looked beefy and well-supported.


    It is advertised as an “easy to install bolt-on application.” “Easy” and “not complicated’ are different things, however. (For example, losing weight is “not complicated,” but it sure as heck isn’t “easy.”) Most elements of this install as performed by Dave’s Offroad Outlet in Sonora, CA weren’t complicated, but getting everything bolted together wasn’t exactly easy. Long skinny fingers and persistence were needed to get it all in place.


    Once mounted it does appear that you could drop my Taco out of an airplane and land it on this plate with no damage. (At least to the skid plate. I think the rest of the truck would bend around it.) I did lose almost an inch of clearance, but I think that is a small price to pay for knowing that I could probably high center on this and not do anything but scrape the paint. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

    One picture tells the whole story; Mud caked where the plate scraped, the exhaust secure behind the Iron Curtain, and the transfer case looking down from above, very well-protected.

    Hi!! Sorry... This is an old topic but @RedAlertCA how is this skid treating you??

    Do you have any other skids in addition to this one?

    I'm curious because as you said this seems to be the main area that needs to be beefed up. Might just go with this and rear diff skid...
