Working on my privacy fence for current clients

It's a fairly substantial project considering I'm by myself right now

Total length of fence is about 140' , the top of fence is level on the road side , overall height varies to ground elevations from 6'6 at driveway end to 10' at high end .

The fencing material will be 26 gauge , Stone Grey corrugated metal to match the house siding . Post spacing is such that 2 panels fit between the posts , and there will be a continuous , 7" x 1 3/4" cap on top to act as a bit of a roof over the whole thing




All of the framing for the fence , with the exception of the pressure treated posts , is from fir framing material we saved from the original building we deconstructed .

I'm making the caps from some old fir 2x10 car decking that was in the old elevated carport area of the house .

I'm putting a 10 degree slope on the cap and the only way I could figure out to do it efficiently without making some elaborate sloped bed on my thickness planer was to rip the boards on edge with my 10" circular saw , a heavy rip blade and a rip guide beefed up with a piece of hardwood decking




A bit of belt sanding and the caps cleaned up pretty nicely





At the driveway , I designed the fence on each side to curve into the driveway because of course I did , square would be too peasant , lol

I mitred a series of pieces into a rough blank , mitres were glued and reinforced with 8mm Sipo dominoes




Couldn't use the circular saw set up on the curves , instead I roughed out the shape with a jig saw , refined the curve with a belt sander and spindle sander , then scribed lines for the edge thickness I wanted and for centre and then milled off the excess material with a power planer and 4x24 belt sander with a 36 grit belt




I start putting metal on tomorrow

 

I can't be the only one....

but I would love to just spend a couple days, heck even hours, just learning from watching you work. I can't even hang a piece of drwywall "perfectly" and every single thing you post I'm like

 

True craftsmen are a thing of the past, love your work man.

 

I would love to do some of this type of work again. It has been a few years since I have even see anyone do almost anything custom like that. Most people will settle for off the shelf products for anything but this takes some thinking which people don’t like to pay for anymore seems like

 

Started residing the house and installing all new window this past fall. I got the house done before cold weather hit except for this last section. Last two days I got the old siding ripped off and scrapped ( $26!), last two windows installed and got a good start on the siding. Should take another day to get the last part finished up.

Then I’ll move onto the front porch and landscaping around the entire house.

 

Got the Workbench all sanded down and ready for some Marine Varnish.

EDIT: This picture was of the bottom side, I decided to quickly run the planer over it a few times.

 

Totally cheating. I use a solid piece of 3x48 that I personally milled from a tree a took down with my hand axe.

JK. I love this pic for so many reasons. Personally, I'm not a curve person, so when I see people's solutions to curves... it's like... oh, that's how you do it! It's usually ingenious and crafty and at it's heart, so simple, but I wouldn't think of it. Duh!

Also, I love clamps. We all have a lot of them, but not a lot of them in the sizes we need, so... here's all the 18-24"ers... and than, oh, bust out the big boys...

 

So, I don't have a 10" circular saw... so I would have tried to put this through my 10" table saw... did you use the circular saw because it was easier and/or more accurate?

 

easier to take the saw to the board instead of trying to run a 17' long 2x10 through the tablesaw on edge plus at work my tablesaw is a DeWalt 744X portable so while thats a good saw , the circular saw is less prone to bog down and blow breakers

I considered my 16" circular saw but that would be awkward

Got the yard all cleaned up yesterday and some seed down (wasn’t in the house early enough in fall to plant). Gotta year out the garbage they planted in the bed out front and plant something nicer, but that’s a project for next weekend. Might build a small raised garden bed for veggies too, debating between a permanent one or just using containers again.

 

New to the home improvement game, just bought my first house.

Over the weekend I put in a new sink, faucet, garbage disposal, under the sink plumbing.

The problem is 1 of the shut off valves I replaced has a small drip.

I used a compression shut off valve. I noticed the copper pipe had indentations from the previous valves.

What else can I do to stop the leak??

 

Sometimes a small drip will fix itself in a few days, just keep a bowl or bucket under it and monitor it frequently. Sharkbite/gatorbite fittings work good, but be sure the pipe is clean, and you need about 15/16” of pipe that can slide into the fitting.

 

Making the curved rails for the two curved fence sections

Decided to laminate these . 7 plies at 5/16" x 3" from some very dry and basically clear 3x12 cedar we kept from old house deconstruction .

I normally use Titebond 3 for this type of work but this time decided to go with polyurethane Gorilla glue

...^^^... Looks like a really cool project ... did you start the glueing/clamping from the middle or at one end ?

 

We start in the middle doing these (apologies for the black and white, didn't have any on my phone)

 

i roll glue onto the whole strip , and stack them up flat , repeat for all 7 plies , then push the works into the form with a big clamp in the middle and then clamp from centre out each way
