I mean, I have lots of extra tools that do the exact same thing. Extras of the same sizes too.

 

I have recovered with them. But I totally didn’t need them. I could have used any number of techniques, but I wanted to get those bastards durty. I actually didn’t even need to get stuck, but I did anyway. 9.9 times outta 10 you could just go around.

Speaking of taco party. I have been self-isolating with my pantry of supplies I call “closet full of food that isn’t made for me by a peasant”

Did you know you can make tacos with anything?


Instead of toilet paper, I doubled down on these bad boys. So many in fact my gf became irritated when I came home from the store.

Thus far I’ve made

corned beef tacos
corned beef hash tacos (from the can after I ate all the normal corned beef)
Mashed potato and corn tacos (aka thanksgiving in Mexico)
Spam tacos

corona virus turned my kitchen into a coloring book of exploration.

 

I have a set of four. I've used them about 5 times... but always to get others unstuck. Used them 3 times on one trip. Snow's a bitch and they work great.

 

I could have used them a dozen times over the last decade, usually after loading too much firewood or venturing into an area I knew was too wet/steep. I’m usually alone at the farm and have had to resort to sketchy tractor recoveries. I finally bought some last fall so I’ll probably never need them again. I did help a neighbor that slid off his driveway with them in the snow, but that didn’t even get them dirty...
I hide them under the platform in my truck, definitely not for looks.

 

Worst case when I got a 2wd S10 stuck in Oklahoma clay mud, I cut some cedar branches and got out easy. I don't see how $300 name-brand plastic boards would give me $300 return in recovery. I'll probably pick up some of those $100 chinese specials for the hell of it.

Speaking of, what's the deal with the axe? I can't think of a real common use for a full-size chopping axe that everybody has that a decent bow saw couldn't do?

I don’t own a pair. But I have gotten stuck and spent over an hour digging myself out of the snow. In that moment I understood the value of having traction boards and absolutely need to get some especially if I plan on snow wheeling again

 

To be clear, I am curious as to that gap in my knowledge. I do bushcraft and carry both a boy's axe and a bow saw. Bow saw is far, FAR more useful but doesn't look as cool.

Also, I've seen people mount splitting mauls... wtf
