My 05 regular cab 5 speed transmission is ready to be replaced. I have been to two different shops and got the same report. My truck has 222000 miles. The frame was replaced in 2018 and i had the clutch replaced in November. I have always had the maintenance done on time and am the second owner. I got it right at 100000 miles. It hasnt ever needed anything big until now. The new Toyota 5 speed transmission and labor cost is 2985. Would anyone hesitate to spend this much on an 05 with 222000 miles.? Just wondering how many others have spent alot keeping their toyota on the road recently. Thanks for any advice

Trying to sell a vehicle with a bad trans or in need of any other major repair will be a struggle. My vote is either fix to keep or fix to make it more sellable and increase the selling value. FWIW, my truck has 175k miles and i wouldn’t hesitate to put a trans in it and keep it for another 175k miles.

I would pay to put the new tranny in then sell it. You deserve a newer truck.

New tranny and keep it and put another 200k on it. 3k for a tranny 35-40k new Tacoma easy decision for me.

Search a scrap yard near you on car-part.com and try to find a used trans. I replaced my 2009 5spd R155 with one that has 77k on it and paid 300 shipped for it and it came with a 6 month warranty. If your truck is 4wd a trans will be a little more but i still think you should be able to replace it with one for under a grand.

Just out of curiosity, do you know the maintenance history of the transmission? I haven't heard of problems with the 5 speed.

I had the transmission serviced when I bought the truck at 100000 miles. Before that I'm not sure. Both shops I have been to believe the bearings are going out. It still runs it makes some nasty sounds though. I drive it daily to work and anywhere else I need to go. First and reverse are a pain to get into also.

It sucks rebuilding it is so expensive due to cost of each part.

I'm surprised you have survived for so long with a reg cab. I'd say keep it! Go nuts, get a transmission and drive it right to the end of the earth!

I vote for the scrap yard replacement. If those 5 spd. were known for problems, maybe not. Those trans. are known to last without problems, yours is an exception. $2900 for a "new" trans. & rest of Taco still has 222,000 mi.? No, used tranny only. Just my opinoin.
