Honestly those things aren't very reliable.

If you want a drum mag for an AR I'd tell you to pick up a D60 from magpul.

 

He's recycling his CVS receipts.

you need to clean the rust; no matter what you are planning on doing down the road. Rust will mess things up long term down the road. in order to clean rust you will be done to bare metal; get either factory matched paint from a local body shop and just literally paint brush it on. Order a paint matched spray bottle; ask the graffiti dudes at college where their paint supplier is and get something close to match.
clean and spray over the freshly cleaned metal to protect it again.
