You would probably do better at Costco. If you do decide to go to BB don't be afraid to haggle on the price.

    samsung

i have seen a ton of sonys with firmware issues which causes them to flake out on HDMI.

they were all new within 6 months, they returned them, got samsungs and are much happier with the pic quality and the tv over all.

i think sony is losing it a bit in there quality area

I have both Samsung and Vizio.
You will only see the difference of 1080p on sets 50" and up, stick to 720p.

    All the normal TW BS
Samsung for LCD/LED, Panasonic for Plasma. Plasmas are going to be bigger than what you want, so you will want a Samsung. You are on a budget, so LCD is going to be cheaper.

    It really is that easy.

^^I don't view digital pics on my tv but Bluray on a 42" 720p and a 42" 1080p looks about the same to me. There is improvement but not much as compared to regular digital tv (480p).

Samsung and Sony are both great brands. My parents have a 52 inch Samsung and I have a 52 inch Sony that's 2 years older (both LCD), and to my eyes the Sony still looks more accurate. Samsungs are way too bright for my eyes, but again, that's a preference thing. Some people think lots of bright colors = great picture. Whatever you get, do some reading online to get some calibration settings - that will greatly improve the picture. My Sony is calibrated, and while my Dad loves his Samsung, when he comes to my house to watch the game or a Blu Ray he always comments how amazing the picture looks. That's the magic of calibration!

That being said, for my bedroom and living room TVs, I have 2 40 inch Vizios that were much cheaper and are quite good at what I ask them to do (watch TV).

EDIT: I also agree that don't worry about the 240hz, etc. I wouldn't even pay attention to the contrast or color ratio. There's no industry standard for that ratio, so every manufacturer is free to basically throw whatever crazy number out there they want. Get which TV looks the best to YOU.

I have two sony's a 42 and a 32 bot lcds the picture on each is fantastic. I have direct TV and I think it is better than time warner cable. Except for when it rains hard. I bought both of mine from beach camera online, cheaper at the time than best buy, circuit city, or any other store.
