My wife and I are looking to go to the Outer Banks in April for a week or so. We have our first baby coming in late June, so I'm hoping to make this a good trip.

I haven't been out there yet. I'm located in Rock Hill, SC.

I'd like to come up with a plan to see some sights and do as much off-roading as possible.

Any locals or persons with experience out the please suggest some routes and points of interest.

Also, if I need any permits to drive any specific places let me know so I can get that sorted.

Ocracoke, not sure on cost? If any?may still be rebuilding?

Believe Hatteras may have started charging.

If you like primitive then you would like Cape Lookout. Permit and ferry ride.

Freeman Park, Carolina Beach need permit-kind of blue collar at times and can get busy!

Fort Fisher is pay also-no overnight unless changed.

Many were free when I lived at the coast, but have changed now and not sure what costs are.

Can/could camp at Freeman Park and definitely Lookout.

At one time could park overnight, but not sleep at Hatteras.

I'm in NC myself. I see people driving on the beach all the time down near Pea Island. I don't know much about the offroading. There are lots of great spots along 12 to hang out, sit at the beach -I really like the KOA in Rodanthe for camping or lodging in a cabin. You're 30 mins or so to Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. There's a decent Liberty gas station in Rodanthe for provisions. I recommend the fairy ride to or from the OBX to the mainland. Lots of decent food options up in Kitty Hawk/KDH/Nags Head and things to do. I also recommend the drive from OBX to or from Wilmington, NC - its' a nice chill few hour drive through some backroads and cotton fields.

Most people who come to the OBX of course like to fish/surf/camp. If you're going to tent camp, summer probably isn't the time for it due to the humidity.

I also like going for cruises from Asheville to the beach in NC. Split time in the mountains and the beach it's a nice meshing of fun and adventuring.

I like driving so for me, just being on the road is part of the fun.

You can go see the wild horses up in Corolla - I've not done it yet myself but have heard a lot about it.

The stretch to the north of kitty hawk is a nice little spot that many don't explore. Hit up Outer Banks Brewing in Kill Devil Hills.

Check out the flying saucer house in Frisco.

The light house in Hatteras is nice. Water is turbulent around there tho for playing in. Just explore up and down 12 and you'll find places to stop and see - coffee shops, food, etc. There's some nice AIRBNBs from what I've seen online too.

Good luck, any questions hit me up.

All areas of the Outer Banks are beautiful - can't really go wrong.

The only off road I've done is the drive from Corolla up to Carova and the NC/VA border. Head North on Hwy 12 and it eventually just dumps you off on the beach which technically is now a highway itself. Miles of beach to drive, about two different communities you'll encounter before they cut you off at the border (no paved roads), plenty of wild horses to see. Not hardcore offroading at all but extremely scenic.

Last year when I went, I believe it was $55 for a week or 10 day permit to drive on the beaches. We stayed in the southern part near Hatteras last time. Absolutely beautiful. As the guys above said, you can't really go wrong with any part of the OBX. Definitely take a day trip to Ocracoke. Go checkout all the lighthouses you can! Drive out on the beaches at Cape Pointe. When we were there fishing, the guys next to us caught about a 5 ft shark, and about a 40lb Cobia. There are shells galore out there too. The OBX will be your new favorite vacation destination. Also, I had no problems whatsoever driving in the sand. I actually didn't even air down. In our pack there were 2 second gen Taco's and 1 Tundra. The Tundra had a little trouble in the sand, assuming because the weight. As the guy mentioned, you can take a day trip to Corolla and see all the wild horses. That's a pretty awesome experience. What part are you guys staying in?

Also, as the guy above mentioned the Flying Saucer house in Frisco is very cool! You can't miss it if you drive down to Hatteras. It'll be right on the side of the road with some Aliens in the front yard.

We're taking a week, so the whole thing? We tend to improvise these trips.

About the Tundra in your group: I always get some guilty pleasure at seeing full-size trucks struggle off-road. Especially the diesel gang types that can barely make it over wet grass.
