If you can find them big enough, burls can make really cool tables.

This is such a cool thread. I have to search my photos, I have some cool finds...........Stone Mountain, NC -- outside Elkin area. There is a really cool homestead from the 1800's at the base. Climbing to the top, a lone chimney stands. I always wonder how did someone get way out here. Crazy.

    Probably a root cellar.

You can actually see next to the actual house foundation where the root cellar would have been and it looks to be even connected at one time by a tunnel. The one built into the hillside is huge! Probably 30or more feet wide and about the same deep. I think it might have been a barn of some kind. I went back again yesterday and there looks to be another structure similarly build into the hillside but not quite as large. Would love to know more about the history of this site. When this covid thing winds down I'm planning to inquire with the town's historical society.

It's possible it was just a dry storage or, depending on where you are, it might have been ice storage. Folks used to cut blocks of ice in the winter then pack them in sawdust and they'd keep for a couple of months.

Sort of in the woods. I store my canoes and kayaks on the edge of my property, leaning on a 2x4 between 2 trees. Momma had made a nest in the high end of a canoe. I flipped it over and they all slide out. She grabbed one of the handles of a kayak, which she hung on to. The babies hung on to her.
