What's a good entry level A/T tire? I live in southern California and go to the desert about once a month. I would like to stay under $600 for all 4 and I run 285 70 R17. Thank you!

Price wise, Falken Wildpeaks would probably fit your budget. Possibly find a good rebate or deal on some Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S. I was able to get my Coopers in size 265/75/16 for $646 installed at America Tire.

Getting a reliable set of LT285/70R17 AT's for under $600 is going to be tough I think under $800 would open up a bunch of really good AT's. Your best bet for keeping under that price would be getting a lightly used set of tires.
